Maybe Shaw University should seriously think about moving most of the campus onto any 30 to 40 acre single property they can find maybe in the St. Aug property if that university does go under. If they sell all of their current rezoned land they can probably come up with the fund to start fresh and in a more stable financial and property situation.
Instead of the current piecemeal urban layout, the university build a tight campus with a much better master plan and stronger connections between the buildings. The architecture could be inspired by Estey Hall, basically using that same style and design language across the entire campus so everything feels connected to Shaw’s history.
The current layout just doesn’t make much sense for a university trying to grow and universities relocation is not unusual, Wake Forest did it, for the better of the university and look at them now.

1966, unless ARCHITECTURALLY relevant, is not “historic” enough for me to just blanket-statement say “save these buildings!” because architecturally, they’re complete ass. Knock em down, build new (and you know, SAFE dorms), and sell off these plots to fund it.
Raleigh has already lost a lot of mid-20th century structures, e.g. the Milton Small teardowns. But as we saw with Small’s 1960 RMB/RPD building, mid-20th century structures are often difficult to adapt to today’s needs… more difficult, ironically, than older structures. Not even spectacular design saved the Burroughs Wellcome building in RTP. Functional obsolescence is tough to overcome.
The 1960s Shaw dorms were part of a massive campus overhaul that was financially constrained from the start and could never be completed. No doubt the architect was given an aggressive cost target. They’re not bad looking, in that context. The buildings in the plan that were never realized would have been in the same style, making the campus look a little more cohesive.
I wouldn’t say that everything built before 19xx (choose your number) must automatically be saved. The older, the more likely it is to be worth saving but discernment can produce a Yes or No.
lol I asked chat what a redesigned Shaw University would look like if they decided to build a new clean-sheet campus and the general design was based on the Estey Hall building and it basically gave me William Peace University.

Duke was called Trinity College when it moved to Durham, and was a Methodist school.

The headline makes this sound like they’re getting back on their feet, but the article sounds like they’re still so screwed. I feel like it’s maybe time to start considering assets to pay all the money owed, not continue to borrow more with no accountability or solid plan to repay it.
