DTR HBCUs: Shaw University and St. Augustine's University

I’ve ridden by st augustine quite a few times in the last couple weeks since weather has calmed down and man, the buildings and campus in general look terrible. Even if the university can be saved there is so much work to be done

football field looks great tho

It makes sense to question who they are trying are trying to get into business with.

And another one…. It’s like Shaw and SAU are racing to the bottom. It’s a shame for students that choose to go here when they could have a real college experience at a University that they know will be around in 5 years.

The Universities are sitting on a gold mine (land) and instead of using the gold mine to pull themselves out of a spiral they continue to sink through misappropriation of funds, lawsuits, enrollment issues, unicorn ideas that end up being scams, and infrastructure that is crumbling. SMH.

The very thing that Shaw and SAU alumni tend to fight about [selling land] is the very thing that will happen when they go bankrupt. Instead of selling some land to finance and modernize the university they are willing to go bankrupt and lose it all. Just terrible management all around.

Hopefully the field and surrounding land can be sold to the city for a new park, and the state can get the historic campus buildings.

So long as they further fortify the historic St. Aug Hospital remains and allow the park to be built around it, I’m so down

I would also love to see it kept and repurposed. I always thought it was cool looking

but if there is a local legacy and history involved…i can understand searching for options on the existing site. but i think growth is likely limited where it is now??

i almost moved here in the 90s and im fairly sure on Dix grounds they have kept some of administrators houses now repurposed for art training. some of the stone stuff might be good to keep.

I thought about that place as well, but I just couldn’t live that far out. Instead I ended up at the Cotton Mill.
