Why so negative? They did so great on their dog park and shipping container bar concepts they created in the last few years.
Track record doesn’t lead to an optimistic outlook. I’d be happy for them to start making progress to being more than a marketing company.
Do my eyes deceive me? Is there actual work occurring on the KMart of my youth?
May be simply demising the 90+K sf Kmart space into two smaller anchor spaces.
Same thing happened at the US-1 former Kmart location (Best Buy and Hobby Lobby).
I assumed they would be getting started on their initial plan for the site:
I figured if they just filed for building permits, they’d want to get started prepping the site as much as they can and be ready.
Story Highlights
-
CityPlat leases nearly all spaces at former Raleigh Kmart.
-
New tenants include Gold’s Gym, Final Score basketball facility.
-
First businesses open second quarter 2026, full opening late 2026.
I love how that’s just literally not at all what they stated they were going to do lmao - they really do just fly by the seat of their pants and just… say stuff, regardless of what they actually end up doing. So it’s just gonna continue to be a… strip mall ![]()
i kept reading. the highlights left out a lot
vacant:
- 2,200-square-foot space to fill with a grease trap
leased:
- 810 Billiards & Bowling
- Vavela Cafe
- Mythic Golf
- CityPlat also moving HQ from downtown
Well, with their offices there at least they can eat, bowl, play, yay…..
Vavela….think that’s a CLT thing.
Ok awesome, that is certainly much cooler sounding. Some variety. Where is current CityPlat HQ?? Wonder if it’s a street facing space that will now open up for something better ![]()
That’s actually a pretty solid lineup of options overall. I bet that Golds Gym is going to be a hit over there.
Fun story: For many years 107 Fayetteville Street was the Lawyers Weekly building. I joined the paper in 2012 just after they vacated the building for a less expensive location, but I had my job interview there. I thought the interview went really well, and before I left I had to use the restroom, and then as I was trying to leave the building, I walked out the wrong door and ended up on the fire escape, and the door closed behind me and locked. And I could have just knocked on the door and asked someone to let me back in, but I was terrified that I did that, they’d think I was an idiot and not hire me, so I descended the fire escape, dropped down the last few feet into the alleyway, climbed and hopped over the fence in the bottom left corner of your picture and snuck away undetected. The gambit worked, because they ended up offering me the job and I later become editor-in-chief of the whole paper and I never got myself locked out on a fire escape again.
The point being: There’s a lot of history in that old building.
there used to be some startup offices there along time ago, it’s actually setup pretty well for a co-working situation which would be cool –
Fantastic story!! I hope you shared that with the folks there at some point, after you were well established!
Saw somewhere on social media that there was a vote at the council this week on this Rezoning. Passed 5-3. Anyone know more about that?
make it 50 stories!!!
