I wouldn’t be shocked if the cladding was going to start soon. The materials test/mock-up display had this blue underneath much of the final exterior elements.
Cool to see the other side of the building:
Apparently there is a gallery inside, which makes me think this would be open to the public.
There’s also some interior shots which we’ll never see, as we don’t work there.
Some interesting tidbits:
-
Community Colleges System offices are now in their own building on Caswell Square, which is adjacent to the new Education Campus. Staff will move over, and eventually some of the buildings on that square will be demolished.
-
The long-range plan is to renovate the old education building, where DPI and Commerce are now. Beyond that, eventually the Archdale Building, which is the tallest building facing Halifax Mall, will be demolished. It will not be replaced.

A long-term plan is to construct a new building for the governor’s office, with an aim to make it an impressive location to take visiting dignitaries and business leaders considering bringing major economic development to North Carolina. Potential future sites include the older state records buildings or the green space left by the demolition of the Bath Building.
I suppose that the mansion isn’t impressive enough?
I’m more interested in that giant computer interface at the end of the hall. Impressive tech for the public ed sector. This angle also shows how well integrated this is with the Globe and environs.
Well it would replace the office of administration building which used to be across from the museum that was torn down. Where are all those employees right now? I can’t recall what building they were moved it.
I came across this facebook post back from 2024 that mentioned an idea proposed at the DRA’s 2024 Summit: “Create a northern corridor by demolishing the Archdale building to connect Halifax Mall with Peace Street/Seaboard Station”. Does anyone know if this is something that is being seriously considered or pursued?
WOW I actually love these initiatives. Wonder if we could somehow revive them from the dust??? ![]()
I think it’s dumb to just demo it and not replace it with a new development. The Halifax Mall is already pretty dead/wasted space. The hell do we need more of it for there?
How about a 30-story chick-fil-a?
Relocating the prison is a fabulous idea. That could really open up some things in that area.
I’d hate to lose it because its iconic. But if it were to go, restoring the grid and having the mall flow into Seaboard Station might help to activate things - particularly if the state sold the blocks right on Peace to developers. I admit, that is pretty farfetched, lol.
