Show Off Things From Other Cities

The Moat as you describe it I-277 is hated by some in Charlotte but not me as it efficiently moves traffic around the uptown area. Many have proposed replacing it with a river no joking. However lets remember the Raleigh based NC DOT built it. Raleigh remember had no interstate highways until 1983 or 1984 so thus no need for interstate loop downtown. As I said many in Charlotte would love for it to be removed but I think it will never happen as NC DOT uses it for so many primary routes like US 74.
But on Nashville I agree that city is a hot mess! Raleigh needs to be best city it can be and others should strive for that as well.

Are you suggesting that Charlotte’s or Nashville’s legacy built environment is akin to what was shared in Wroclaw, Poland?
Are you making the huge jump to presuming that my comment means that I don’t think that building would be appropriate for Raleigh?

I suggest a Mikes Pastry annex for Raleigh.
( although Boston can keep the single digits with 35 mph gusts)

The goal is for this to be replicated along our BRT routes. New Bern will have a 15-foot wide multi-use path/greenway with trees, art, and hopefully dense housing and retail (via the TOD). We just need a contractor to build it…

Definitely try modern pastries too, they’re located not too far from Mike’s. I honestly prefer them over Mike’s but that’s just me.

One of my faves! I love those giant lobster tails that they sell. It’s like 4 pastries in 1! Yum!!!

Thanks for the pasty recommendations guys I’ll definitely be trying those out. My sweet tooth knows know bounds.

Jacksonville FL built an automated train to connect both sides of the river in downtown. Rode it for the first time this week. Built in 1989 and it is free. Connects the southbank of the river with the traditional downtown on the north side of the river. Photos from the train and of the train. Basically a monorail type train. Still like the gondola idea best for connecting downtown Raleigh to Dix Park though.

Miami has the same system, but it’s much more comprehensive and highly utilized. It’s actually the best decision the city of Miami made and they made it 40 years ago.

I will be there on Saturday and yes Miami’s PeopleMover is much busier and connects traditional downtown Miami with the 2nd newer downtown of Brickell.

I know, I ride it all the time! I love it. FWIW, downtown proper has a lot being built right now. It’s pretty crazy.

BRT is coming to Chapel Hill

Congresswoman Foushee Announces $24 Million Federal Investment For Chapel Hill North-South Bus Rapid Transit System

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 15, 2025) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) announced that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded over $24.4 million in Capital Investment Grants (CIG) funding to Chapel Hill Transit for further development of the Chapel Hill North-South Bus Rapid Transit System project, which aims to improve access for low-income communities, senior citizens, students, and other residents in the area.

“I am thrilled to see an additional $24.4 million being invested by the Federal Transit Authority to implement bus rapid transit in Chapel Hill. This award will help fund an accessible and sustainable bus system that will connect residents and visitors to job opportunities, schools, healthcare facilities, family, and more. I look forward to seeing the transformative impact that this project will have on reducing carbon emissions, easing road congestion, and improving job accessibility in our growing region for years to come,” said Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04).

“We are excited to receive this grant award. We appreciate the continued support of our federal, state, regional, and local partners for this landmark project. Our project team works tirelessly to move the NSBRT towards completion and this funding is a result of their excellent work and dedication,” said Brian Litchfield, Director of Chapel Hill Transit.

The Chapel Hill North-South Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will serve the Town of Chapel Hill along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, South Columbia Street, and US 15-501 South, and includes 5.7 miles of exclusive bus lanes, bicycle and pedestrian paths, the purchase of fourteen vehicles, and optimized station locations. This project will enhance mobility and ease congestion in the corridor by connecting riders to major hubs, job and educational centers, and healthcare facilities, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), UNC Hospitals, and Downtown Chapel Hill.

In March 2024, the Chapel Hill North-South BRT project was recommended for over $138.3 million in the FY25 Capital Investments Grant Annual Report and had previously received over $8 million in FY22 CIG funding. This new award will increase the total CIG funds allocated for this project to over $32 million.

Miami Nice. If you love high rises and new high rise construction like I do Miami is the place to go. Plus the weather is great in the winter. 100 story Waldorf Astoria tower underway up to 14 floors will top out at 1049 feet, newly completed curvy 66 story Aston Martin Residences 66 floors 817 feet tall along the Miami River, newly completed 57 story 830 Brickell office tower tops out at 724 feet. Plus rail anyway you want it. Metrorail (heavy rail) Tri-County (commuter rail) and high speed rail (Brightline)
