Smoky Hollow Park

Is that screenshot pulled from page 2 of your link? If so, the background is showing up for me.

RIP my Bluebeam, lol

Those “accessible pedestrian connections” on the east side seems so random. I can’t imagine wanting to leave the greenway to walk on the sidewalk next to Capital Blvd.

The city might be trying to entice NCDOT to give Capital a road diet, doing this would help. Capital has enough room for BRT and wide bike lanes.

At this point I’d be happy if they just planted trees. That new section of road is like a new home that was moved into but never decorated or personalized.

Anyone catch that “proposed highspeed rail” line in the graphic? :eyes:

pretty sick that Raleigh could have 2 large quality parks with pedestrian access bookending downtown with 2 smaller urban parks centered between (moore and nash square).

lets not forget Chavis

Years and years ago I had the idea to have a continuous and dedicated bikeway loop connecting Smoky Hollow - Pullen - Dix - Chavis - St. Agnes - Smoky Hollow and have an uniquely designed (inspired by the respective neighborhood’s history) observation tower at each park to give a difrerent lookout from around the city center.

Brand the network of trails and towers “Above the Oaks”. Painted paths or special signage along the route.

Really think this would be a decent tourist draw - especially with the expansion of e-bike rentals.

I love it. You could also add Fred Fletcher to the loop

Of course the Artery would be a main connector outside of the loop bringing more access.

It’s been kinda quiet on Smoky Hollow Park lately. The expected construction timeline was aiming for a 2026 start. Are we still headed in that direction?

Ask Elon Musk or the Supreme Court if we are going to actually get the funding.
If we don’t, I expect all of us to get behind the next option for funding, and that’s the rezoning of the site next door to its west. That developer of that site seems willing to revisit a funding model for the park dependent on getting a rezoning that makes the proposed tower pencil out.

So, I would much prefer this regardless of additional Federal funding or not lol - built UP not OUT, and let them also fund the park to be built out in tandem with whatever tower they’re planning. An absolute home run, and I still can’t believe the former idiots on the council ruined this to begin with. It’s actually a blessing the developer waited for a new council to be voted in before starting a watered-down version of their plans with zero funding for the park.

I believe council specifically opted to put the less expensive option on the docket as to solicit private funding to compensate the larger project of the park.

Edit, wasn’t this a bond funded by local taxpayers? What does that have to do with the Feds?

Ideally I’d rather have the funding AND a city & its citizens that get behind building tall and densely in our core.
One can dream.

Nope, previous council denied a rezoning request that would have tied the park funding to the development paid for by the developer. It sat with no progress for 2 years before getting funded by a federal grant. And we all know the story with federal grants under the current administration…

It was included in a list of projects for a parks bond that got approved. But maybe that was just for the design phase funding.

Yeah I think you’re right. Looks like ORLP only funds up to 50% of the total project cost. So it’s a mix of bond and federal grant funding.
