The future of the Person St. District

Wishful thinking that Unlikely Professionals would come back here. The Person St location was a great downtown retail spot and unfortunately it moved to NHills. NHills store feels forced.

I tried to convince David Meeker to keep it as a “trophy shop” but turn it into a Trophy Brewing speakeasy in the back. Don’t tell anyone, let them figure it out. He didn’t do it…

Yeah that was a big bummer when they moved… and nothing else filling their former space for the same reason U.P. left - idiot/asshole landlord who refuses basic maintenance and difficult to work with. Big shame!!! I, too, wish they’d come back and take this space but 99% likely it’s just gonna be another bar.

Retail in the front, speakeasy style bar in the back would be the best of both worlds! Kinda like what Unlikely Professionals was doing around the corner… alas :smiling_face_with_tear:

Custom Engraving had been there for 30+ years. The founder died last year at age 97.

Well RIP, I’m glad they’re just moving and not simply closing the business. It’s a win/win for Person St IMO. Longstanding local business lives on, but a huge space that created a dead-zone on an otherwise pedestrian oriented retail/restaurant corridor (one of the few we actually have in Raleigh) opens up to NEW local business opportunity.

I wonder if there is any opportunity for Oakwood Pizza Box to push into this space?

Not the rumors that have been shared with me, but that’d make their space WAY too big for a pizza shop hahaha - I honestly don’t see how WillCo could expand and keep the place as packed as they currently do, either, to be fair lol

I’m hearing otherwise from the owner of Oakwood Pizza. They have plans to expand into that space, how far along they are with the lease agreements I’m not sure of. But they reached out to my wife to build the interior upfit.

Well alrighty then, your rumor is much more substantiated than mine! Genuinely more exciting than “just another bar” tbh even though I’d much prefer some more retail offerings on Person

But who knows, plans change all the time. I also had solid info Gussie’s was building another bar in East downtown. Then at the 11th hour they backed out and took over State of Beer instead.

Bummer that Gussies didn’t move into East of Downtown. Need some more options around Transfer.

I hear Rochambo is looking for a buyer - I wonder if that’s where they were going to go?

No, it was a smaller building further east on Hargett. I actually went to Roshambo Sunday trying to pick up a sixer because my local bodega on Haywood is closed down. Anyways, all the coolers were empty and the bartender said it’s because they already found a new owner and were rotating over the inventory to the new owner? Sounds like they are staying which is good news.

Not sure if this has been reported yet, but Raleigh Magazine says the former Ish deli will become Gallicchio’s Market & Eatery. From the same owners as the former Pounded Pig Food Truck. It will open this fall and has already begun renovations:

That would be great news. Always liked Roshambo - but went there a couple months ago and also noticed all the coolers were empty.
