Trying to fill up some more dates at Lenovo?? … Raleigh Trail Blazers?
(not seriously)
Just going to get on the Tom Dundon is buying the Trail Blazers for $4 billion. Don’t know if this will affect our MLB chances. But it may kill Portland’s.
This could potentially screw our chances. I’m not gonna lie. I think it’s dead @Loup20 this may have buried it also from what we know the Trail Blazers are staying in Portland also, just like the Hurricane he’s saving it from relocation. But MLB is probably dead for Raleigh this is a major blow for us.
With no inside info whatsoever, my first thought is that definitely seems likely to hurt Raleigh’s MLB chances. Both the dollars and the time/attention needed to complete the acquisition seems like it would take funds and attention away from the effort here.
In addition, he is from Texas, and will have a major asset in Portland, so Raleigh just seems like it will be a lower priority.
I hope I’m wrong. Will be interested to hear what others say (and to see what actions occur).
Yeah I think it’s dead…
That’s quite a knee jerk reaction there. One article and you’re out.
Let’s wait and see how this plays out. I expect we’d be looking at money coming from a collective of investors for an MLB team, not just one guy.
I’m sure @Loup20 has some opinions on this as well.
The Portland Trailblazers deal isn’t done, so don’t expect a quote from the Canes leadership until papers are signed. When they start commenting, I think you’ll feel better about the situation (if you’re an MLB to Raleigh supporter).
Nothing is changing on the baseball front.
Dundon confirmed with the News & Observer that he is buying the Trailblazers
Well, there’s this twist to the professional sports landscape in Raleigh…
From Facebook’s “Raleigh Downtown”
BREAKING — NHL Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has reached an agreement to purchase the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers for over $4 billion — sparking speculation about a potential NBA move to Raleigh.
This may need to be a separate thread if there’s any skin to it.
BTW, I don’t know much about the NBA as far as franchises and rules to, but I wouldn’t expect a move to Raleigh with Charlotte having a team.
I think part of Paul Allen’s estate required the team to remain in Portland when sold.
I think some of the minority owner partners are Portland-based folks?
Also, wouldn’t NC State need a separate arena then? Seems like a little too much scheduling congestion for NHL, NBA, and NCAAB all with the same season timeframes?
Ok i’m allowed to confirm.
They are still 100% in for MLB.
Here is MLB Raleigh post…
And they confirmed with WRAL too…
Feels like another case for Raleigh being a better option in 5+ years than in 2 years.
Obviously Dundon is very capable of making money still, as it was a stretch for him to buy the canes for $500 million 5 years ago and now he’s part of a $4 billion package.
If MLB said “we’re expanding next year” it feels like this deal puts us in trouble.
If they say it’s going to be 2030 or later, this likely doesn’t affect it at all. But I think we’ve known all along that Raleigh is a better long term candidate than immediate.
So hopefully the MLB keeps dragging this along!
Accidentally posted before finishing. Oops
@OakCityDylan Multiple news outlets are reporting that the new group intends to keep the team in Portland.
Same thing happened when the Sonics were bought. Fact is, everything is just speculation. Funnily enough, Portland, like Seattle at the time, also needs a new stadium. And you can bet they’re going to use potential for relocation as leverage.
This brings to mind the similar situation in Nashville. Do you spend the money to build a new arena or stadium to keep the teams you’ve got - in this case the NBA - and how does that effect the money you’d have to spend to get an expansion MLB team. I know in theory the public purse is bottomless. In reality …
Yeah, that’s true. How many counterexamples do you think we could find where a pro sports team was sold to buyers from another city, and the buyers said the team was going to stay put, and the team did in fact stay put? It would be a whole hell of a lot of examples, right? And on the other side of the scale you’d have the one example of it happening 19 years ago?
Using the threat of relocation as leverage to get more public subsidies to build a stadium, that I totally believe, though.
This is a specific example where the team both has a need for a new stadium and an owner that’s heavily invested in another city. Not sure how many times that’s happened.
they love their clickbait. like, a lot
