Cycling on Greenways in Raleigh

They seem to be referring to the specific easement the city already holds over their property, but it’s kind of a moot point considering the city has the power to just seize it anyway.

How can organization called “Livable Raleigh” be so much against everything that makes a Raleigh more livable (Like more greenways)? They should be ashamed to call themselves “Livable Raleigh”.

You’d think that trails connecting neighborhoods would be something “Livable Raleigh” supports just based on the name. But because they’re just cranks that think change is illegal, she fits right in.

It is deranged behavior to imply that the city is engaged in some conspiracy to run a trail through her yard instead of her neighbors’. Especially considering she’s wrong on every point.

She says the City doesn’t have an easement because they tried to file a dubious withdrawal of the City’s easement. The city had an easement, but they tried to rescind it using a law that only applies to streets. That law requires that in order to terminate a street easement, it can’t have been “open“ for 15 years. If that were the case, half the conservation easements would be potentially useless. Really unhinged to pretend that a Hail Mary like that means the city is “lying” about having an easement.

She keeps talking about “the contract“ in which the city agreed not to build a trail. I think what she’s referring to is the easement in which the developer granted the city its Greenway easement. That document includes language that no paths or improvements be built within the easement area, but it is very clearly restricting the LANDOWNER from building in the easement area, not the city. If you give Duke a power easement, it will say “do not build in this easement area” - but that doesn’t mean Duke can’t put a power line in the easement because that’s why they got it in the first place.

I prefer the name “Laughable Raleigh” for these fools.

Ah, so they’re basically taking the stance of that asshat in Cary who recently got himself a nice hefty fine for destroying the sidewalk easement leading to a greenway entrance that went between his property and the street.

Pretty sure these people are idiots.

Livable for me, but not for thee.

Looks like the Quail Hollow Rd multi use path is getting underway this summer. This will be part of the Big Branch Greenway, once the other sections are completed

Hey all! I was just looking through the Capital Area Greenway Plan. It looks like they’re making some progress with the Big Branch Connector. Anyone know if they have already picked any other sections to tackle next?

Selfishly, I am hoping that they’ll add some of these trails in North East Raleigh intersecting Marsh Creek Park. I moved to Raleigh from Durham a year and a half ago, but sadly I am in a greenway desert up here. The proposed routes would be amazing though

When I saw this pop up on Nextdoor I was going to respond but decided that these people are basically just nutso and there’s no use in debating. Okay, so you’re opposed to more tall buildings. I disagree but I kind of see how some people might feel that way. But opposing a greenway? C’mon. This is just pure unadultarated NIMBYism and thank you for revealing your true colors.

I just received this greenway update that discusses the planned Marsh Creek greenway

Good info, sadly….see ya on it in 2030, maybe….

Wow, thanks! That is great to hear that they’re already working on it. Getting these areas in the suburbs connected to the larger network should get a lot more people biking in Raleigh

Looking at that map, I could take a neighborhood street down to Marsh Creek park and get on the new trail in around 5 minutes :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

“Remember that all Greenways are closed from dusk until dawn.”

I still use it way past that time. Kind of a silly thing to put in the newsletter.

I wonder if that has something to do with protecting the city from a lawsuit if something happens to someone on the greenway in the dark?

Literally the same update talks about the glow in the dark center stripe to extend commuting hours after dark.

And just like that raleigh is closing a central section of the NRT for another two years with no detour options. Was barely open for 3 months

Oh good grief. The lack of detour options for these projects is appalling. They would never do a road project like this without a functioning detour.

Here are a couple of pics of the stream bank repair happening on the Crabtree Creek Greenway. Lots of gravel. I’m curious to see how they handle this, as many opponents of the Big Branch connector raised concerns about erosion. Seems like a good opportunity to show how the City can protect the streams.

This will supposedly be completed by the end of June, but I’m expecting it will be closer to the end of summer, since they started behind schedule (my pic puts the start date on Jan 5, but the website says Jan 31).
