I have good news for anyone who opposes this idea. Considering the data center is planning to be built in SE Raleigh which is a predominantly black area, many black Americans are signing up for the city council meeting to vote this idea out for their own community safety against whatever the hell a data center does to our mental health

There are two more in north Raleigh not shown. The ones already here are not the massive ones everyone is worrying about. As long as they have looped systems that recirculate the water. They are not in the top ten water users. Golf courses are large users of water. Lonnie Poole course has reuse/reclaimed water as does chilling towers are Centennial. There are 3 golf courses in area on reclaimed water.

I think we do have an issue with not all data centers are created equally. However, until we can get a REAL handle on how to deal with them in our regulations ie water, noise, electricity etc you are going to see push back from the public on these. Golf course comparison while understood is like comparing a rain storm to Cat 1 hurricane in the eyes of the citizens right now. And rightly so, these data centers have popped up with little to no oversight and people are popped off about it and so ALL data centers, large, small, baby, sweet and nice. They will all take a hit until their rep improves through transparency and regulation. IMHO

I would support a temporary moratorium on data center applications within Raleigh’s zoning jurisdiction until we get our research and regulatory act together.
Wake, Orange, and Chatham counties have already done so. Just prudent due diligence.
EDIT: Wake County has only discussed a moratorium but has not (yet) passed one.

Where/when did Wake enact a moratorium (temp or otherwise) on data centers? I don’t find that info online?
Both WRAL’s coverage of the application withdrawal and AI think Wake has passed a temporary moratorium. But I think they have just discussed doing so. AI probably confused over finding reports of Wake County municipalities Apex and Wendell moratoriums.
Interesting since AI told me that Wake hadn’t passed a moratorium of any kind.

I have to wonder if any County moratorium could be superseded by a municipality allowing them? If so, I have to wonder if that’s why there was a request for annexation by the city of Raleigh?

Need their water. No utilities without annexation.
Also Wake County would only be able to control areas outside municipal boundaries.

A data center and a golf course getting built beside your home do two different things to its value.
We should build the next data center at Indian Creek Country Club. Then Bezos and Zuck can walk or bike to the office!

Even though not in Raleigh city proper, in Raleigh ETJ.
I know at least 2 that are not on that map either. Not sure if you’re talking about the ones up off of Departure Drive in North Raleigh but also these data centers are not near the size of the typical ones being proposed for AI infrastructure.

There are also really small ones, like 1918 Wake Forest Rd.
If in Raleigh’s extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) then Raleigh’s zoning applies and a Wake Cointy moratorium would not apply.
Could get water in the ETJ. But would need to request annexation for Raleigh to add to their tax base.
