Dockless Scooters for Raleigh

When the asset is rented but not owned, then the user cares less…
It’s fairly universal. Scooters are as users Do…

I think removing parking on Glenwood South and adding a protected bike lane would be a win.

Exactly, I’ve said this before and the useless parking decks like Bloc 83 will fill up quickly. (I don’t know if it’s actually useless but you get my point).

Oh boy. Bikers versus scooters could be ugly but maybe if everyone is going really slow it would be ok. It’s also helpful when the bike lanes are free of dead deer and trash like on Crabtree Blvd. Cringe.

Raleigh, in partnership with the city’s three scooter companies, now has more than a dozen designated parking “corrals” for scooters. Riders will continue to be charged as if their trip hasn’t ended until they reach the designated parking areas.

Thankfully the corral parking only applies to Glenwood South, this would be an issue riding home if not. I found this part about cutting the speed in half to be a little excessive, at least the scooters stop running at 11pm so riding till 4am won’t be the case.

“The city is also capping how fast scooter riders may travel on some streets on the weekends. Speed will be reduced from 20 mph to 10 mph on Boylan Avenue and Peace, West and HIllsborough streets from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”

I wonder what they define as “Glenwood South”. If that just means that folks will dump them one block east or west, that’s not going to work either.

It’s the general area around Glenwood from Hillsborough to Peace Streets. Here’s a screenshot from Lime’s App.

so then they’ll just dump them on Boylan or West. Bad idea.

If you ride up to Tin Roof and can’t park them in front, as long as the app indicates where the corrals are, why would you go a block away to unload the scooter?

I feel most roses generally don’t have that foresight.

You’ll walk a block to avoid continuing to get charged once out of the special zone.

Am I just misunderstanding you? All I’m saying is that if the app says to park it in a corral across the street there’s no reason to park a block away outside of this Glenwood South zone, no?

We’ll see what happens.

We took a daytrip to Providence while staying in Boston last week. Providence had Spin and tons of parking corrals, all of which were indicated in the app. They also had a feature that took like $1 or something off your ride if you parked in a corral. For those who have used the new ones on Glenwood South, can you confirm whether or not we’ve implemented a similar feature?

The ones in Raleigh will continue to charge you as if the scooter is still operational. Not sure of the specifics yet on whether it will continue to charge you until someone new comes to rent them, like a couple days or not.

Oh I like that idea! Get them with the carrot in addition to the stick!

Did you see “River Fire”? I was in providence for a cousins graduation once.

I wish, it sounds great! Apparently that’s a summer thing? We just went because, despite growing up in New England, I’d never been to Rhode Island before. Plus I wanted an excuse to ride Acela for cheap. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That was my favorite Providence thing when I lived in New England awhile back. I would love to see it again, but it seemed like a sparsely occurring summer thing when I was last there.

Anyone know why dockless scooters are banned from SW Raleigh? The other cutouts at least make sense (campus, state property, Dix park, select parking garages, etc) but scooters are otherwise allowed everywhere inside the 440 loop.
