What’s the plan for all these cottages?
Been curious about this, too. I would LOVE if at least one of them would become a little art gallery, with perhaps an art studio that locals/regional artists could apply to take residency for a few months. Imagine if every 6 months or so, a new artist took residency (studio and supplies could be provided to them via grants).
Ok that’s all my photos; please go check out the stone houses in person as soon as you can. This is something we will all be proud of—the perfect front door to Dix park. Everything here is so well done, and the sculpture (that some doubted, lol) is absolutely stunning. I’m over the moon at how this is turning out. Still some finishing touches to wrap it all up, but WOW.
One is a visitor center with park history and a big park map on one wall. The other two look like flex space/park offices/event space. I love the art gallery idea.
The chapel has lots of great info and you can talk to Derrick. I stopped by last month and learned a ton. Will post some literature I picked up there.
The new sculpture is the work of a renowned artist with sister pieces around the country. I hope we’re close to landing a public Chihuly sculpture either at Dix or NCMA; his only piece in the triangle resides at the Umstead to my knowledge.
Who is Derrick? I’m very tickled at the idea that the sole purpose of a park building is that you can use it to talk to one guy.
“And here is the building where you can talk to Chad.”
Refugee housing for all the Hayes Barton and Boylan Heights residents being pushed out by backyard cottages and nearby apartments ruining their historically charming neighborhoods.
I miss @haus_of_chad

Imagine if there were no gaps between buildings in this view
CAM, Nash, and Legends would do that, if they happen.
Dix Park cleared up after a brief rain? Perhaps we need to do this in Moore Square and the bus station as well?
No one has mentioned this yet but there is also an accessibility improvement project (orange lines) going on within the park:
These projects are being funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and are supposed to be completed before the end of the year, per funding guidelines.
A multi-use path along Lake Wheeler to the Farmer’s Market? That’ll be a huge improvement over biking on that road.
Oh yeah! The proposed improvements to Lake Wheeler would make a world of difference.
The latest design plans show:
- sidewalk on south side
- multi-use path on north side
- intersection improvements, including roundabouts and crosswalks
- bus stops (I assume covered, but at the very least not a signpost on a grass shoulder)
Yes the lake wheeler road project is the most important pending project in the city right now. Not even close, and it’s the only delay I’ve been disappointed by. The way downtown will open up is going to be surreal, and of course the walk/bikability of the corridor and the way it will frame Dix.
Did we lose the peanut-about?
It is further down Lake Wheeler if you look at the link.
