Dorothea Dix Park

Hadn’t seen this drone video posted here. It’s cool video flying at sunset up from South Raleigh, over Western, down over the new Rockway apartments along Dix, between the two new large Weld highrises on Lake Wheeler, and then over Dix Park playground. I’ll post this on the Rockway/Weld topics too where someone often posts drone videos. This one is from someone on the dumpster fire that is raleigh sub reddit.

We have new crane activity at Dix Park. I can’t tell what this is all about but it is definitely a new location

From what I can see on the livestream, they may be using it to move and plant some of the large trees, without affecting the playground equipment and stuff.

Isn’t that a little much for planting the sunflowers?

Fencing up around structures all across the park.

I think a few of those are planned to be demolished soon.

Preparing the land for the next expansion or just knocking down decaying buildings?

I’d assume for both reasons, many of them have asbestos.

I believe “The Grove” and “The Creek” areas are a part of one large expansion/project as part of the creek restoration plan. None of these houses are on the final design map:

Edit: Page 153 shows the buildings that will be demolished or refurbished:

That’s makes sense if those houses being knocked down are in the creek area. If I remember correctly, the creek restoration was the next project

Well, maybe they heard the citizens’ cries after last year’s crop was disappointedly short! :sunflower:

It’s a good pic, and I was gonna post it earlier, but the hearts broke it for me. LOL

Given that it’s midwinter, might they plant more later?

i also thought the nc art museum did outdoor movies in decent weather.

Not my picture obviously because I don’t know how to add those cool watermarks.
Posted 4 days ago on DIX park social, says it will open this spring.

That was their Valentine’s post, hence the hearts. The play park is looking fantastic!

Please tell me they’re removing the giant brick eyesore with the steam coming out the top. I’m sure this will be a fun playground but it looks like a dense cluster of concrete paths every which way. Granted it’s dead of winter and bound to look better when finished and greened up, but I’m hoping for openness and whatever that utility building is, it’s U-G-L-Y.

However I absolutely LOVE that shot / angle of downtown in the upper left. What a great visual, especially with the hazy look to it.

Sadly, it’s not on the demolition list and is visible on the final plan for the plaza. It’ll definitely be shielded by the greenery that I’m seeing being planted. This will take years to occur though.
