Dorothea Dix Park

I’ve been to your building. I will give you the wide sidewalk but I call you on that tree claim! :face_blowing_a_kiss:

Passing judgement before you’ve even been. Before it has even opened. Beyond bizarre.

Stuff like this is why I call out the toxicity of baseless negativity on this forum. Wish you’d stick with reddit.

Can’t wait for everyone to be surprised at how much more is done at Dix. Clearly many folks haven’t been in a while. Over ~1 year the stone houses opened, ADA improvements were competed all over the park, art was added here and there, a ~dozen old houses are being torn down now and turned into green space, and swings added you don’t see in the posted pics. Obv this stuff has been documented here but in person you can start to feel the broader vision coming together. The play plaza is getting all the attention now, but the reality is we’re further into this already than just one project.

Putting aside the cost consideration of renovating additional acreage beyond the 18.5 for just this phase of the project, there’s a Master Plan you can review to see how this piece fits within the full 308 acre picture. If you sprawl out the kids play area, you just take away from other things the park will be for someone else one day.

You can compare this phase to the Cary Park all day, but the reality is executing something as massive as the Dix Master Plan takes a lot more time and money. It’s simply a more ambitious project so you’ll just need to try to enjoy the pieces as you get them…or stick to Cary Park if that’s your jam.

Maybe taking a virtual trip to their webpage would help you understand the scale and view on the ground level. The aerial views aren’t showing the trees that are huge but translucent due to their late blooming schedules.

Dix Park posted a sneak peek on Instagram and I think it shows pretty well that the “boots on the ground” feel will be much different than some might think. It feels quite large just from the video.

Because it IS large. We’ve known this since inception! :joy:

Not to be outdone or out trophied - Cary Park did not want all the guts and glory to go to Dix Park. After all, it is Cary and the do like being Number 1.

I joke on here, but I don’t see it as a competition. We can have 2 nice things in the area. Kind of like Durham vs. Raleigh… I cheer for both!

I too agree. One best public playground and one largest playground. We should be having bus loads of kids showing up this summer from all over the country. And look mom, a two for one park experience.

What’s actually great about how you all are comparing Cary’s park and ours is that it means the area has two amazing options for people to try. I hope that comparison (ie flamewar) helps highlight both parks for people to go to.

Also, from my circles, people WITH kids, Cary’s park is “meh” and this one in Apex, the kids like better. :upside_down_face: I think all that design and fancy pieces are just lost on kids. My daughter’s review, “There’s no monkey bar anywhere. I just want to hang upside down. :expressionless_face:

Just goes to show - we need to put out a survey for those under 10 not those over 30. LOL>

In downtown Cary, the slides kept my kids (even the 13 year old) busy for quite a while, “the nest” is neat, and there’s more there beyond just the playground: the library and arts center being right there is great synergy for family outings, actually.

But yes, the biggest / best destination playgrounds in the area are probably Pullen and Laurel Hills in Raleigh, and Pleasant Park in Apex. Those will keep kids entertained and active for hours on end.

 if only there were a bunch of large historic buildings nearby in Dix for an actual central Raleigh library. If only someone (probably someone very good looking, with a latin handle) would propose that

All of this “Cary v Dix” discussion ignores the pretty awesome playground at Chavis - which, in terms of actual play structures, is probably the coolest playground I’ve seen in a long time

Where did all the 70’s style playgrounds go that I grew up on?

You haven’t lived until you’ve been flung off of a merry-go-round on a playground. As a bonus, I got pushed off a slide when I was 7, broke my arm and busted out my two front teeth. #GenX
