Upping the cash prizes might bring some more attention to it. Memphis In May’s 'que competition gets massive attention, and its a big draw for the town. It is also coinciding with a major cultural festival of the same name.
Keep it open on a Sunday to differentiate yourself from the rest of the market
They could hold it on the closed off section of private Johnson Street & adjoining plaza @ SH2!
I think Dix Park is an obvious location.
Will do. Are there any restaurants I’m missing here?
Downtown area:
• Friendship BBQ (303 N. West St.)
• Sam Jones BBQ (Boylan Heights)
• Clyde Cooper’s BBQ (Wilmington St.)
• The Pit (Warehouse Dist.)
• Longleaf Swine (Transfer Co.)
• Southern Charred (Glenwood South)
Outside of Downtown (should I even include this on the map?):
• Wyatt’s Whole Hog BBQ (Gateway Plaza)
• The Preserve (Creekside Dr.)
• Ole Time BBQ (Hillsborough St.)
I’d include those on the fringes, just my opinion. Still could be plotted on the “Raleigh BBQ trail map” even if not in DTR proper. Thanks for doing that!
Maybe a different color dot for eastern and western styles?
I don’t have time to compare at the Moment but I compiled a short list on this Tweet.
I decided to start with Downtown, and here’s what I’ve got so far:
That would be awesome! I might try to update it later with those categories. Unfortunately, however, I can’t tell what Friendship will be serving, and Southern Charred appears to serve both styles (I am going from their website; never been there in person). Every other place professes to serve eastern style, so I’m not sure how much it would change the map.
For those that serve both, maybe a split color? Like a “house divided” sort of thing? Great so far!!!
Love this!! This should be sent to NCPC or VisitRaleigh or whom ever as a great starting point to promote DTR’s official cuisine.
Still ITB, there’s a BBQ joint that operates out of the back of the Shell station on Six Forks: Chop Shop.
The old Gorilla Grill location.
Somebody from N&O is definitely reading our threads.
Raleigh will become a barbecue capital, and other grand food proclamations for 2020
Pink? Hopefully this is for the smoke ring on the pork as opposed to undercooked meat.
I was thinking pink for the stereotypical color of pigs (
), but I’m open to suggestions for the next version.
If you pick a shade of red for the streets while keeping the buildings pink, then you might be able to evoke a smoke ring.
Friendship BBQ to open in the same space as Five Star.
Whoops! Already broke by ITB Insider and reported above by @Drew.
Good point. We may only get 30 years out of this.
