Five Points, East End Market, & Raleigh Iron Works

Yeah I agree about widening the lanes and doing some streetscaping. I know adding another lane is a catch 22

Long-awaited sidewalk on Oxford Rd. underway (Fallon Park, near Crabtree greenway). Tree protection zone barriers marked for the entire length and starting to dig up the street.

This will be huge for connecting Five Points to Fallon Park and the greenway network. Always wanted to see this. Very big deal imo.

Eh, given the lack of sidewalks not far away around Wake Forest Rd, Whitaker Mill, The Loading Dock and Iron Works, this sidewalk seems like a really low priority.

Agreed, definitely an odd choice. Oxford is a super wide road and there’s hardly any traffic on it. I run/walk down it regularly and have never felt unsafe.

The city’s materials say it’s a good candidate because of both pedestrian safety and connectivity. As someone who runs and drives there, the street width and continuous greenway make it easy to drive much much faster than 25 mph.

Proximity to two schools, connection to greenway that’s only going to expand with Midtown-St. Albans plan, and no private property disruption. Not saying Whitaker Mill or Iron Works aren’t more necessary or urgent, but this seems like a win too.

To add to your point, this project, as small as it may seem, is probably 5-6+ years in the making. There are many hurdles to jump over before construction actually starts.

i thought there were some real (expensive, lots of tear-up) issues with an extra lane on six forks? i cant recall exactly but I thought it was some how just making better beltline access and some some tweaks near the 440 ramps? have there been roads in raleighs past where it was decided…“ok, a new lane is a no-go, development will now shift to a different area…make the best of this corridor and perhaps slap more transit in.?”

There’s working going on on the Atlantic Ave bridge right before Whitaker Mill. Looks like they’re striping. Any one know the details?

Figured the Five Points thread was a good place to share this but HIGHLY recommend y’all get tix to this show… Gary is a comedic genius and has gotten some critical acclaim in recent years, leading to performing bigger theaters (last time I saw him was 2022 at the Carolina Theatre in Durham), but later this year he’s doing a limited-city tour of his new show and one of the stops happens to not only be in Raleigh… but at The Rialto!!! This is a huge get for them, and I hope it fuels more bigger comedy acts choosing to book there. I already have my tix!!!

Just purchased as well! Saw Gulman in Durham in 2022 and in DC back in 2018. Excited to see a show like this at the Rialto. Really enjoy being able to go to Five Points for a show.

Took a few pics of the progress on Oxford Rd. Most of the sidewalk and railing is in place as you head towards Reave Dr.

I think Birney Park is just a section of Budleigh East? Grabbed this diagram from their website

Crane is going in at Birney Park, seems like lots of cranes in Raleigh right now.

There’s no mixed use here? Any retail on ground floors?

Here you go, enjoy the one single retail space they included in this gigantic development. Wonderful way to activate the sidewalk around the hundreds of new residents, here (/s)

Very interesting that they are using a tower crane for Birney Park project, I thought that was just a 3 story condo building.

Maybe they are starting the 4-story apartment building between that and the old folks home?

Probably had to satisfy the ITB NIMBYs. They’re so selfish and shortsighted to not see that everyone who lives here will have to drive to nearly everything.

Usually I’m disappointed when a development like this doesn’t include retail but given they actually have done so in the most important spot at the intersection, and also given the proximity of Five Points in one direction and HT down the hill at Glenwood Ave in the other, and also given the fact that no further densification at this spot is likely, I just don’t find myself disappointed at all.
