Oh, but what an opportunity for Raleigh to lean way in to its status as a (if not the) biotech hub AND a climate-resilient post-pandemic urban area committed to density AND family-friendly green living. How about (hear me out here) the city buys the old Cargill site for mixed-income public/private housing, a park and greenway connection, AND a let’s say 6-8 storey lab building that functions as an incubator for biotech startups. (Such a building would be in the area of 112-176 feet high.) They could take a page from NC State’s PSI boondoggle building and add a lighted greenhouse to the top to make a visual impact. The location is right along the southbound BRT line…
Sounds like a solid plan. I’d like to see more of that in both downtowns. I worked at the Chesterfield in DT Durham and loved working in a downtown for once. Sigh…
I’m way behind but has there been any movement on the N&O site? That would help shift it slightly to the west as well.
There has been negative movement, meaning it is back to the drawing board and you can throw all those old plans out.
The owner is an international land speculator with no development experience. Would not expect anything to happen on this site for a long time.
Hell…Just let Kane buy the N&O lot and build a 40 story high rise and be done with it.

It is frustrating. These lots are so important to the the linkage and dynimism for all of dtr.
Maybe Kane would do a signature building to dominate out skyline for decades. Nice place for him to keep an eye on his accomplisments. But we need something creative at the base.
Kane probably would but it.
A 60 story sea foam green tower with a 20 story parking pedestal.
PLEASE quit messing me with that seafoam green. If you speak it some one might just do it. Sigh.
I’d prefer any developer BUT Kane take on this lot. While I appreciate that he keeps his developments local and activates locations that were previously dead or dying, his attention to design and aesthetic is non-existent. Hate me all you want, but I’d much prefer a BIG out-of-state developer with even deeper pockets build something that would actually LOOK good and go TALL. This is still the most important and potentially transformative block in all of downtown Raleigh, IMO. Needs better than even Kane’s “best” (which is what, The Eastern, a tall glass rectangle? The Dillon, a somewhat interestingly designed building with some unique orange color accents but plopped onto a hideously ugly and all-too-prominent parking pedestal? I honestly don’t think I can make a good argument for any of his developments for “Best Design” because there are always an equal amount of downsides to every building lol)
Bring on Trammel Crow!!
I agree. This lot is THE prime spot for a signature tower, right in the heart of downtown. I’d love to see a 600-700 ft tower here.
But without those cheap looking HVAC cutouts por favor.
Tramell Crow is good I would like a foreign developer though.
