General Parking Discussion

The triangle lot across from 400H has a brand new paved paid parking lot! So exciting, it’s beautiful! Just what this city needed and dreamed of!

Throwback to when there was potential for condos or an outdoor dog park bar here.

I was so surprised when I saw this. It is better than gravel though.

Trash :wastebasket:, isn’t the 400h parking deck (separate from building) dedicated for public and private parking? If so, this lot is pointless even with the upcoming retail project nearby. Anyone want to buy the lot and make it more useful (garden with a fountain, mini dog park, or mini playground)?

Yeah I mean I want literally anything else to go there, but a freshly paved lot looks better than gravel spilling everywhere.

This lie is owned separately from 400H (it seemed like you were assuming that this was paved over by the owners of that building).

This is owned by CityPlat so, well, what can I say. I always thought a dog park sounded far fetched (:drum:).

That was not my assumption nor what I stated. I simply stated what I mentioned to suggest that people should be able to park in the deck.

the city’s free parking program pilot is temporary, as we predicted

The busy holiday season may be over, but DTR’s free, 2-hour weekday parking program is still operating through February! :raised_hands:

Eligible decks include…
:parking: Municipal Complex Deck, 201 W. Morgan St.
:parking: Wilmington Street Station Deck, 117 S. Wilmington St.
:parking: Moore Square Deck, 233 S. Wilmington St.
:parking: Blount Street Deck, 314 Blount St.
:parking: City Center Deck, 429 S. Wilmington St.

After this winter, the pilot will be evaluated for efficacy and considered for permanent implementation. Stay tuned for how you can share your feedback and be sure to take advantage of the program while its in effect.

Friendly reminder — Parking is still free after 7pm and during the weekends in all city-owned decks.

so I was at Costco in Atlanta this past weekend, unusual for us since we usually go to B’ham. We are hunting lunch afterwards, and my wife takes us to the Battery of all places. It was interesting, and I really did not want to park in a deck because I didn’t want to pay - but that is about all there is, and I was reaching that hangry stage. I was presently surprised by the free two hours. We had a pretty good lunch, and zipped back on to the Perimeter and zoomed back to 'Bama. I’d be inclined to go back to that area again because of the free parking, as long as its not a game day - I can not even imagine that mess, tho I am sure I’ll find out one day when we venture over for a game.
Long story short - free 2 hour gets a check plus from me. Even if I am willing to pay when I go to DTR just for the ease and speed of parking and getting out of the car (I detest trolling around looking for a parking space, that just makes me angry even if I am not hungry) 2 hrs free is a bonus I will happily accept.

At $1.50 a pop for the hotdog combo, I don’t know you passed up lunch at Costco itself! :kissing_heart:  :hotdog: :cup_with_straw:

I know this is heresy, but I don’t really like their hot dogs, lol. And since we were in the “big city” we thought we’d score something a tad better.

Is the Varsity still open?

I’d love for it to be permanent, if and only if, the rates do not apply to days when there is a high demand for parking (conventions, Red Hat concerts, parades, and festivals) and most of the on-street parking is replaced with drop-off or delivery zones, bike parking spots (including rentals), and parklets/outdoor dining.

I know that’s a long sentence for the literature fans but :man_shrugging:t4:

…why? Don’t you like free deck parking? If anything it might make people more used to parking in the decks.

Hey now, nobody said they’re “good” hot dogs - he said they’re $1.50 hot dogs!!!

Isn’t the old saying never let the desire for good get in the way of the cheap?

From what I’m hearing, there’s a new food hack coming to Costco soon. They are switching from Pepsi to Coke soon, and I hear that they will add root beer to the fountain. This will allow you to buy a vanilla soft serve and split it among a few folks to convert your hotdog and drink to a hotdog and root beer float.

I will now be totally and completely confused

DTRA has their survey live now on the 2-hour free parking in deck program.

The only one of their solutions to recapture lost parking revenue that I don’t like is extending the normal M-F parking set-up to Saturdays. I’m fine with a flat fee, or extending the parking hours, I just wouldn’t want a solution that makes you have to check the time on weekends to see when your time is going to run out.

Is there any information as to whether it helped bring people downtown? I’m curious
