Sir Walter coffee and kitchen is open now!
Really nice inside!
Very nice indeed! How was the food?
It’s good! Adding this place to list of places I will visit again for lunch. Probably heading back with my office for a team lunch soon.
DGX’s last day of business will be December 3rd. Just confirmed it with one of the cashiers.
I know alot of ppl on here won’t care due to the homeless population over there, but this is a big loss for DTR imo. there’s not nearly enough neighborhood retail, bodegas, or convenience stores in DTR proper. stores like this is what makes a downtown area feel like an ACTUAL downtown…
As someone that lives close by, it had its pros and cons. They were just beginning to make some positive changes, but it was too little too late. One of my neighbors left because they were fondled while shopping there. They had literally been here for years and left within a couple of weeks after it happened.
The biggest issues most people around here had was was that the business wasn’t taking responsibility for the situations that were occurring. It seemed like the things that were purchased the most were beer, candy, cigarettes, and junk food. Unsurprisingly, the area was usually surrounded by people consuming those items and discarding their trash all over the sidewalk.
While in my opinion it’s not their responsibility (directly), they didn’t have a lot of love from their neighbors. Most residents (especially the female ones) in Skyhouse, Palladium Plaza, the Edison, and Founder’s Row were not happy with the kinds of things that were happening there. Most recently, a stabbing a few months ago.
I heard the DGX was not making money, but I would not have been surprised if the lease didn’t get renewed by the Edison either. What was supposed to be an amenity for their residents became more of a deterrent.
I’m hopeful that something like a convenience store can go in and work there. Hopefully something designed to serve local residents with groceries and not quick dopamine hits.
I’m sorry to hear that, i really do hate that the residents have to deal with stuff like that, there’s really no excuse for it.
On the other hand though, i also feel like an increase of residents (aka more apartments in the area, which is slowly happening) along with a proliferation of neighborhood retail and convenience stores throughout DTR would go a long way to deterring these types of incidents in the future. Not only would more eyes on the streets help naturally deter things, but more stores like this in general would help spread out the population of those who like to hangout at spots like this and potentially cause disruptions. Currently, DGX is a hotspot for those populations because it’s literally the ONLY store like this downtown, except for Taz’s maybe. CVS was in a similar situation before they closed.
I know that DGX and CVS are only doing what’s best for their businesses/situations, but closing these stores isn’t helping the situation in the long run. If anything, it’ll only make things worse as residents will have less places to shop, and the homeless/vagrant population find new areas to congregate at en masse since there’s now less options for everyone.
Today’s marks the grand opening of High Rail, on the top floor of the new Hyatt House Raleigh Downtown.
Elevate your social experience at this new rooftop restaurant and bar. As you step in High Rail, you’ll notice the locomotive decor, multiple bars, ample indoor dining, and a stretched rooftop terrace.
Sip on finely crafted cocktails, order up regionally-inspired shareable plates, and soak in amazing views of the Downtown Raleigh skyline. It’s a great way to start the weekend! (Raleigh DT Community FB Page)
Is it too late to go here instead of Sirwal? Lol
They just opened, let em work out the kinks before we descend on them with our armchair opinions and bougie takes.
Don’t kink shame them!
I went on Saturday night - was trying to see a friend who was tending bar there - didn’t eat, only had a drink - but the vibes were good, food looked/smelled very good, and the view of downtown from that angle is cool and new. Seems like a nice addition to the area.
Now we have to do something about that stretch of Peace to make it feel less stroad-like and make it feel more urban & a connector between its north and south sides.
Made reservations for Poole’s Diner tonight after the meetup. I hadn’t been since they were new. I was excited about the new space they expanded into. Unfortunately they don’t have their liquor license for the new space, so you have to go next door to buy $17 cocktails served at the bottom of a plastic sip and stroll cup, and carry them over to your seat. Odd that they didn’t discount the experience-dependent high price tag. Anyways they were out of stuff and it was a small menu to begin with, so we ended up leaving without doing dinner. It was gonna cost us like 300 bucks to get a bottle of wine, an app, 2 entrees, and 2 cocktails. I’m still convinced the AC restaurants rely on a clever/cool factor that isn’t there to inflate their prices, and I’m usually left with a feeling of buyer’s remorse.
I did snap this for John. Sadly it wasn’t Sunday…and this was the cheapest main. And it doesn’t even come with fries or a furniture store. How lame…
I was trying to get reservations over the Thanksgiving weekend. No luck unless I wanted to eat under a full moon. I guess I should be glad. No use going and spending that kind of dough. Certainly not with a plastic cup cocktail and a limited menu.
You can get a real glass if you buy a whole bottle of wine, which runs from $60 to like $600. I’m not blaming them for having an alcohol permit delay, but maybe don’t move over to a new space without that and then act like everything is normal. We were very polite about it and tried to roll with it through a cocktail. Some people there were very vocal and not so polite. To me that’s on management and not the staff’s fault.
-quietly- I’ve never had a great experience at an AC restaurant, and I’ve tried three.
The best was the counter at Poole’s, but the diner stool was murder on my back and the experience just didn’t feel worth the expensive bill.
I do hear great things about Death and Taxes from people whose taste I trust, however, so I hope it won’t be 0 for 4.
St. Roch, Jolie, and Bhavana are definitely my downtown nice restaurant go-tos.
As my daddy used to say if you can’t do it right don’t bother. They should have delayed their opening rather than doing a half rate experience at full price IMHO. Good on you for rolling with the experience and not being an ass to the staff. Mgt gets a D minus. Try again.
Death and Taxes truly did have an overall great experience. Food was also just right. We went there recently for the first time and would definitely go back.
I am an expensive burger apologist but I WILL draw the line at $24, goodness.
