General Retail/Restaurant News

Had Aunt Betty’s to ourselves for about an hour. It was great. Drinks were inventive and really nice pours and the staff is amazing. If you like tasty booze I highly recommend it.

I’m going to dram and draught tomorrow at 8am to start day drinking… I mean for the Christmas parade.

I wanted to go there after but turns out they don’t open till 4. That’s going to be a long day… I may have to come back.

Someday we will run into each other at one of these things organically and it’ll blow my mind

I’ll buy you a beer one day @GucciLittlePig. Of course I’d never know it was you.

This may not be the perfect place to post this, but Cameron bar and Grill in Cameron Village has a pretty good draft beer selection and on Friday nights it is only $3.50. That is a damn good deal and I don’t know of anybody else that has specials on Friday nights.

Cameron Bar and Grill gets high marks at our household for having a decent late night menu. We’ll go there for a bite after attending the NC Symphony.

Just got to Aunt Betty’s. Oddly not packed at 4pm on a Wednesday when everyone is out of town, which is my favorite time to go to a bar. Tasty drinks (definitely not cheap). I love gin and tonics, and the decor is pretty cool.

Runologie is moving to the Pine State location a bit northeast off Wake Forest and Capital.

I attended a RDU Forest fundraiser at Pine State this summer and I seem to recall they had a small bike shop. I wonder if Runologie is replacing or adding to their offering?

I’m calling it now. This is a mistake.

They might not have a choice (as in, perhaps they’re actually moving because the rent is just too damn high)

Their current location and a lot of that block is owned by “401 Hillsborough LLC”. Wonder if the move is coming from the landlord and a redevelopment? (Zoned DX-20-SH)

Heard from a birdie State of Beer is expanding into that space, also rent was too expensive for Runologie.

Bingo. Rent is too expensive for most retailers downtown. There really needs to be some sort of rent capping put in place, otherwise we will drive all local business out of downtown and become a Whitebread wasteland of corporate chain BS.

Yeah that’s a terrible location to move to.

So … like affordable rents ?

I’m not sure if you’re agreeing or what, but yes, the City should make moves to cap rents for retail just as much as they should for residential.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, but we need to look at options for affordable businesses in this city too if we’re going to put so much emphasis on affordable housing. Otherwise all we’re really doing is providing easier access to cheap labor for expensive businesses instead of opportunity for people of less means to find a way out of their situation.

I’m assuming the food hall model is a good lower-priced option to get new eats in downtown, possibly get settled and move “up” to their own space. I wonder if there’s a model like this for retail?

I think pop-ups are the only thing that work right now rather than a market for cheaper space. Hope I’m wrong.
