GoTriangle Commuter Rail 2023 AMA

Two things come to top of mind: Firstly, the rail corridor serves a significant percentage of our region’s projected jobs and households, creating the opportunity for more compact development and sustainable travel patterns as noted in the Opportunity Analysis reports. The second thing is that there is a feasible opportunity to deliver a regional project in phases - allowing a relatively easier section to move forward sooner while challenges are addressed in more difficult sections.

We are happy to be here. One of the top things we heard from public engagement during the study was the importance of offering service that goes above and beyond typical “commuter periods.” The feasibility study included two additional scenarios, one with 30 minute-peak service [roughly 6-10am and 3:30-7:30pm] and 60 minute-off peak service, and a second with all day hourly service. Additional infrastructure would likely be needed to support the 30-minute/60-minute service pattern, and one thing to keep in mind is that adding additional frequency, adding additional trains, requires adding additional capacity and capacity-related infrastructure. It would also require additional coordination with partners in the corridor.

Thinking longer term, the vision in the 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan - which is beyond the current the horizon year of the rail project – is for 30 minute service throughout the day. Again, that would require additional coordination and infrastructure above and beyond what is included in the feasibility study.
