It would be great if some developers started buying the older buildings downtown and making them taller, while matching or restoring the original designs. Here’s a pretty cool example of this in MA:

We’ll get there if the constant attitude to build from scratch is debated by council members more. It would be great if the conservationists supported the densification of historically pleasing buildings instead of advocating for them to stay the same.

Durham actually has a very cool building going through the review process (link) that maintains the cozy nature of the street while adding density. They aren’t preserving the building (existing facade is not original anyways), but this is the sort of model I’d like to see a lot more of moving forward.
