Seriously, though, what happened to the renderings the developer indicated they would be releasing shortly after their initial announcement?
$100 says they’re not doing SHIT to the exterior lmaoooooo
Honestly I kind of want to keep the exterior as is. Every city needs THAT building and I really feel like this could be it for us
. Could it be better? Sure. But it just makes me laugh a little every time I see it and I love that for me
Agree - although it does need a bath and maybe paint some of the cinder blocks a different color.
Or perhaps restore the exterior to what it was when it was built?
Donna and I had our first meal there December 1st 1979 after our wedding . A dinner on the way to Williamsburg,Va. The beginning of our 42 years of blessed marriage before her passing. ![]()

Damn Dwight, that’s a recent loss. My condolences, may she rest in peace ![]()
I don’t think the balconies, as they were when it was built, would be up to code today. Not to mention it would involve making the rooms smaller - and they’re already pretty small to begin with.
I honestly think keeping it more-or-less the same as the 2003 reno would be fine. I don’t really know what more could be done.
I don’t think that small rooms are the barrier that they once were. Some of the more vibey hotels as of late are being built with small rooms. As for the balconies, I would suspect that original rail heights wouldn’t be up to current code. I suspect that they were originally built 36 inches high.
I certainly wouldn’t mind a damn paint job… beige AIN’T IT.
You are right and Tru by Hilton and Moxy by Marriott have smaller rooms. Their idea is you are just sleeping there and should be down at the bar in the lobby like at the Moxy or at the pool table at the Tru lobby.
I’d be happy to keep it how it is just for that memory. Condolences Dwight, and good to see you again here, sir.
Reminds me of the debate 10 years ago when Marriott began removing desks from rooms as it renovated the primary Marriott brand. Marriott was saying, just go down to the lobby and work from there. The business travelers who are the primary customer base for those hotels complained vociferously, and Marriott reversed its decision.
FWIW….in Roanoke, VA. the colony house sat derlict for 6 years, maybe more. Apparently some city leaders have been stating more hotel space will lead to more events?? a group bought it…paved the lot, painted the entire structure, put bright tubular steel cafe tables in front of every room and redid the pool. a news report said they plan to host events there. interiors are part Scandinavian and part MCM. 165 USD per night. looks great. maybe just a intereior redo and powerwashing will sustain HI.
This renovation is more parallel to the Longleaf than the Holiday Inn. Frankly, this is a better building with more interesting midcentury architecture than Longleaf. I just wish that they paid more attention to the site. If this was in Raleigh, it would be worth spending more money on the entire property. Thanks for sharing!
I agree with John. This looks much more like the Longleaf Hotel restoration, which I think was a great thing. I’m happy this place is renovated and someone has been breathing some life into an old space.
However, for the Holiday Inn, I was really excited about the Kimpton putting a nice new building in a prime location. I am very worried that this Indigo hotel will just be a Frankenstein facelift of a building that has outlived it usefulness, based on budgetary considerations and nostalgia. I would love to be surprised with something really unique and well done.
I too am worried that this will be a cheap renovation and that they won’t activate the property to its maximum potential.
Well I mean this is a given… considering the fact that initially, a 6-story apartment base with a 20-story hotel tower was planned to replace the entire lot (including the wasted surface lot on the corner)
right. i know raleigh isnt vegas and im not sure of the ‘vintage redo experience’ market. ive done some while living in nv and generally enjoyed it. golden spike looks sharp. Google Maps. wasnt sure about using the surface lot for various activities or what have you
Y’all… literally just paint the Holiday Inn Miami pink, throw some cool neon accents around the top, reopen the penthouse restaurant and voila - it’s already 100% better than it has been. I’m being genuine, here, too.
