Holiday Inn and New Indigo Hotel

Happy and Sad. Sad to lose the quirkiness… Sad that in the long run, Raleigh will get a bit more vanilla from this development. Sad that this isn’t being proposed on a surface parking lot… whatever.
At least it will be something high quality hopefully:

Well, it is partially a surface parking lot at least, so we do lose one of them.

Kinda always had a soft spot for the hair curler (and have been enjoying it’s new ‘entertaining’ reflections in 301…) but the age on the joint sucked (ever ridden the elevator??) and that rooftop lounge has been a nothingburger for ages when it could’ve been so much more.
Tidal only has three hotel properties on its developments list. This looks like their first Kimpton.
Hate to say it, but kinda gives me Tryon Park CLT vibes…
Tough to achieve aesthetics of a preserved old boutique hotel in a beautiful old building when you don’t have one…perhaps we’ll achieve a better outcome with ‘typical’ level of finishes / material selection and a little more inclusion for the public with hospitality options crafted in the hotel space. Fingers crossed.

Yeah it really bothers me that so many developers go for demolition when we have surface lots everywhere. I have to wonder how the economics of this work. They are going to spend so much money demolishing this when they could have gone for an existing lot.

Dang RIP Holiday Inn. I’m actually going to miss that building.

I’m guessing it just boils down to negotiations with the seller. Perhaps most of the surface lot owners in DTR are currently planning their own projects. You can only build on land you own…

Meanwhile across the street…there’s no demand for hotels so we’re scrapping that plan. lol

To be fair, this is creating a wholly new experience for DTR, versus creating more of the types of rooms Raleigh already has (even if it might not have enough).

I would rather have just enough rooms than hundreds of rooms not being used. There may be a lot of reasons as to why they scrapped those plans across the street but for this new development, my take is that it will take them 3-4yrs to be fully completed.

Hopefully all these hotel projects will be completed just in time for a (fingers crossed) successful bid for these college Olympic games

TBJ article said developers were aiming for 2025-2026 completion

So this is the residential side. I wonder if the Klimpton side has a different look.

Might give it a chance to look at a proper render and see how all the details and materials are supposed to look. Almost nothing (bar art deco) looks good in a flat diagram like that.

Bummer. The Holiday Inn is one of my favorite spots to park when I’m flying the drone. :frowning:

Construction starts in 2023…OH MY GOD I remember in 2000 when 2020 felt like the distant future. :grimacing:

Bye bye hair curler, bye bye gravel lot

Meh. There will likely be some pastiche of LED accent lighting to jazz things up a bit.

I always found that building weird and unique and just a sit down building sorry it’s coming down.

Getting a little sick of these local news articles that seem to always have a desire to trigger longtime locals. NY developer, historic building, luxury lifestyles…give me a break, it’s a terrible building inside and at best “quirky” (or ugly) outside.

Anyways they mention 4 hotels under construction. I thought it was just the Chick-fil-A hotel so far. What else is there?
