These guys spent several hours installing lights all along the arm of the crane last night. When they were finished it looked like Christmas. I guess they are planning to start working around the clock…

Hope you didn’t need to sleep until this project is completed. Or maybe they just wanted their crane to look cooler…

I can’t sleep at night worrying about all the shadows that this is going to cast on Oakwood.

I have friends in Oakwood. I can’t even imagine.

:weary:

Almost out of frame!
Also, notice how they’re walling off part of the bottom story to alleviate any confusion if that level is 1 or 2 stories, in response to concerns shared on this forum.

I like how the building leans to the left.

From this view we can see another crane and construction in the background.

Wonder if there’s any plans (or even a possibility ?) to move this power substation in the future. I get the feeling that’s an incredibly difficult and expensive, and thus, rarely-ever-done task. Maybe one day they can make it like the one off Glenwood and add some colored lights to it to make it almost somewhat of an art piece (at night).

I’d be up for doing that for the one by the Fairweather as well. That area seems like it’s going to start building out soon.

Definitely can’t just relocate all the substations from downtown out to Johnston County. There have to be substations downtown thanks to Ohm’s Law (higher voltage → lower current for same power → less transmission loss.) Even within downtown, the further you move it, the more expensive it gets, because of all the power lines that have to be moved with it.

There is a thing called a Gas Insulated Substation wherein the footprint of a substation can be reduced dramatically and all the actual switchgear is housed inside an unassuming building.

Duke Energy does not generally go this route. There are currently three in the state, all in Chapel Hill, all paid for by the university. There is actually one planned in Asheville (read more here), but that is a new-build substation, and the same project also includes an in-kind replacement of an old conventional substation, with a new conventional substation directly adjacent to the old one.

Maybe if nut cases keep firing at sub stations it will prompt the state to force Duke to enclose them, and maybe DTR will get an upgrade!

That is the substation across the street from The Fairweather. The pic is taken from Cabarrus St. looking south (approx).
