Municipal Services and Safety in DTR

What attracts them to this particular location? Why does RPD and the business owners allow this?

Smoke shops, convenience stores, and a place to hang out at.

Another multiple offender that should have been in jail or a mental institution, but the judges just keep letting these people go. Complete BS. Sorry for the woman and the people who are mourning the loss.

Meanwhile a guy was assaulted and robbed by a group of “kids” outside the bus station yesterday, in broad daylight. Right next to Young Hearts and Taz’s and down the street from Clyde Coopers. No wonder business are moving out of there (or stabbing the criminals). If they eliminated that bus station and built a 30 story apartment building in its place, that whole area of downtown would thrive.

With Irnya’s law he probably would not been released last time but that just went into effect. VOTE wisely on these judges too many love criminals more than citizens. I think Iryna’s Law will reduce crime here in Charlotte as so much of it is caused by repeat offenders. Raleigh seems no better unfortunately.

I consider myself liberal (though probably less with each year I age until I reach full blown cranky old man), but I just have zero tolerance for violent offenders and all the consideration they get in our system. Some of these stories I see have people who should’ve been in jail for 25 years out in a year or two, and then someone innocent dies. I’ll get off my soapbox but it’s just so frustrating and sad.

In the case of the Ravenscroft teacher who was murdered near Broughton HS and Fred Fletcher Park, WRAL reported “In December, breaking or entering charges against Camacho [the accused] in a separate case were dismissed following a mental competency examination. During the hearing, prosecutors asked to have Camacho involuntarily committed but that request was denied by a judge, according to District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, who spoke with WRAL News over the phone Sunday.”

Will expect to hear more about this one.

The crime was ITB not DTR, but I don’t know that the people on the northernmost fringe of Raleigh at 540 draw much of a distinction between DTR and IBT not DTR.

If that doesn’t make you want to move out of the city and purchase a bunch of firearms, I don’t know what will. The Judicial system isn’t going to save you, calling the cops obviously isn’t going to stop this either, she was on the phone with 911 when he attacked her.

Someone on next door just posted this lengthy report about him from several years ago with the same type of behavior. We can all agree now this experiment with criminal justice reform isn’t working and is making things significantly worse for law abiding citizens, like riding a light-rail in Charlotte.

“I was pretty dismissive about firearms before this person came into my life. Never again.”

I’ll bite my tongue rather than post what I believe should be done with this guy, because I’d likely be banned from further posting.

This guy has serious problems and should never have been set free and deserves what he gets. However, it is not a downtown problem. These things happen everywhere across the entire country. We live in a violent country. But there are violent acts on a daily basis across the region and nobody stops going to Durham or Wendell or wherever because of it. Look at all the drive by shootings recently, none of which have happened downtown. Any event downtown gets way over-amplified in the press and it feeds directly into people’s preconceived fears and prejudices. This in turn hurts businesses and vibrancy.

Today’s N&O has more details about the mental state of the accused. I believe the judge in question is up for re-election and this will probably get him defeated.

Wow, that’s really infuriating. Please someone explain to me the justification of this:

“His bail was lowered to $1 after his first appearance, though a magistrate noted his 10 pending court cases, court documents show.”

So for only $1 you can bail out of jail with 10 pending court cases? This is madness, and shortly after he murders a poor lady in her home at 6am.

Remember this name and face when it’s time elect a new Judge, this idiot ran unopposed for his 4th term. He does not deserve a 5th.

Judge Louis B. Meyer III

Meyer holds seat 2 in NC District Court 10E and as far as I can tell, he is unopposed for re-election.

Well-connected. 15 years on the bench, former partner at Poyner Spruill, past president of the Wake County Bar Association, etc. His father was on the NC Supreme Court. No surprise that there’s no opposition.

So either he resigns or someone will have to mount a write-in campaign.

Definitely don’t understand why businesses keep leaving this area of downtown while thriving elsewhere.

Meanwhile this guy was of course out on bail for 2 other crimes, including assault on a female. And they charged him with misdemeanors in this case. :man_facepalming:t3:

Not a lawyer but I’ve noticed they often increase or add charges after an arrest as they get more facts. Given his history I hope so. Bet he has some mental illness as well.

Awful

I can only assume she was trapped in the house with him? Surely there was a back door or something! Ugh.

Also disappointing to see that we are just going to ignore homeless sleeping in the park. There is a tent there now.

Homeless people don’t need to be targets and harassed just because of a small percentage of them being criminals. Let’s not be ignorant or promote vigilante “crime deterring” actions.

No one is calling for them to be harassed. However, allowing one of Raleigh’s most popular parks become an encampment is not a good trend. The fact is, the homeless population has a significantly higher rate of mental health issues, and allowing free rein of these public spaces creates the conditions for the murder we have just experienced.
