NC Museum of History Expansion

Well, we are only on Phase 1. You aren’t going to have a phased project and then just do it all together anyway. I would guess Phase 2 wouldn’t start until after finishing Phase 1 - at the very earliest.

it would appear from these pics that they are going to complete resurface the outside.

If it actually gets built as shown, that will be one of the coolest looking buildings in DTR.

From the day it opened 20 years ago, the current incarnation of the museum has been a disappointment compared to the Museum of Natural Sciences or even NCMA on Blue Ridge. There just wasn’t that much inside to see. I hope the next incarnation will be better.

It opened in 94! So in 30 years, it has barely changed. Even worse.

Right - they can totally renovate the building itself, and sure I read they’re building a replica Wright flyer to hang over the main atrium … but aside from that, if they’re not going to put some serious money into newer and more interesting exhibits…. then what’s the point? (I HAVE to imagine that will be the case though)

I believe I read somewhere that they have a lot more in storage that they just didn’t have the space to display. The added square footage should bring out more NC exhibits that we have not seen in the past.

It was better than the Natural Science Museum we had at the time in 1994. The expansion of *that* museum was truly transformative and it got yet another expansion in 2010.

It looks like this will finally equalize things.

…..I’m also gonna want to see a change in the wording of a placard I recall seeing the one time I visited our History Museum. To paraphrase, it was an exhibit on pre-emancipation NC that implied that “slaves helped farmers cultivate their land” …… helped, huh? Out of the kindess of their hearts, I’m sure! lmao

No need to sugarcoat history IMO. Tell it like it is… or rather, was. And sorry to the Feds, but this is a State museum, they have no authority to try and force a museum to downplay the atrocities of our ancestors. History is history, and I hope this refresh of our museum keeps it real - the good, the bad, and even the ugly.

Well my ancestors didn’t live in the US then, much less the South. So I don’t have anything to feel guilty about there. But you people….man, yours were the worst.

(I’m being facetious)

I have only been to this museum once, and it was actually somewhat recently in the last few years. I wasn’t very impressed. But I did notice that sign, and it kind of made me laugh that it was so weirdly worded.

Here is the N&O’s write up on the remodeling & expansion. Not a whole lot new, a few details, like additional space will be gained by moving the hvac on to the roof …
