New Bern Ave - Former DMV site

I went to the Helsinki one last year! It’s beautiful, it’s also necessary in a country where the weather is unlivable outside for most of the year. We’re blessed with a prettt solid year-round climate, July and August aside.

You mean June, July, August and most of September :fire::hot_face:

They’re having a kick-off event today from 11-2. Probably a good chance to give some early input.

I was planning to swing by, probably on the earlier side. I’ll report back.

I’m going to Packapolooza. I too will report back (basically on how hold I’m going to feel). :tuffy:

It’s great! Lots of planning folks, stuff to keep the kids happy, free food trucks if you give feedback. And just busy enough to make one extremely upright lady "you don’t want to expose the kids to that"

Very nice setup. I couldn’t stay long but talked to a few staffers that were sharing info about BRT, the new comp plan process, and Tarboro road community center. Plenty of electeds and candidates there too.

very cool. I like the suggestion of a library a lot. I don’t have anything specific in mind and it doesn’t necessarily need to be a library, but some cultural draw and focus on making the building something iconic (if that is even possible going in), or at least funky/conversation starter and make it affordable.

I understand the appeal for affordable housing, but I don’t believe intentionally building sub market rate housing moves the needle enough to justify going in that direction with this particular property. Especially with the free market doing an amazing job densifying all around greater DTR as is.

I think the goal should be something that brings a lot of visitors into downtown, is great marketing/branding for the city, adds another reason for people to want to actually live downtown AND is affordable. If done well it could possibly accelerate the densification and bring even more housing supply into the area.

This part of DTR could especially use something like this IMO

I want indoor (thus year-round) botanical gardens somewhere in/near downtown. JC Raulston is great, but most of it is outdoor-only and thus not as accessible in winter. Maybe this could be a good place for something like that. Get some birds and/or butterflies in there, make it a whole exhibit.

This would be killer in a rooftop greenhouse! Add in a rooftop restaurant/cafe too!

Waiting on the Packapalooza review! :tuffy:

I think this site is a perfect location for 100+ multi-family townhomes (including minimal market rate units) and multiple retail spaces on the corners on each block.

A denser version of this would be great:

Funny memory triggered…
At UNCW during our new semester orientation festival thing (Hawkapalooza?) my tie-dyed bandmates and I commandeered an empty table next to the legit clubs and started promoting our band and handing out handbills.

Hey, what club is this?
Oh no babe, this is Nautilus, a band. We’ve got a show Friday at Fibber McGee’s, want a guest pass?

What have I done lol

It’s the perfect site for a culdesac (Tempe) type of car-free development. The site is huge, so this could only be a portion of it. And they should really rebuild the Harrison library here, making it the signature downtown library Raleigh’s missing. Then the old library site becomes affordable housing right on BRT too. We need Affordable Retail here ofc, affordable to commercial tenants (micro) and affordable goods/services for the community.

The city was super informative at the event and felt like they were talking all the right steps to do the right thing with this space. Lots of good info on other ongoing projects too.

Is that what she said?

New plywood covering all the first floor windows. I wonder if demolition is near?

Seems like a waste of good plywood… Probably just fixin to let it sit there even longer.
