No development planned but as I recall demolition was slated for fall (can’t remember where I heard that), I think this is all to expectations.
Sure 'nough:
We’re getting the site ready for future development. That includes:
Asbestos Abatement: Old buildings on the site may have materials that are unsafe, like asbestos. Specialized crews will safely remove and clean up anything harmful.
Demolition: Once the site is safe, we’ll begin tearing down the old buildings.
This early work is starting now with a fence installed around the property. The entire process should take about a year.
Also putting another notch in my ‘turns out wasn’t because of homeless people’ tally, keep racking em up.
Abestos abatement is a time-consuming process so getting that started sooner than later is wise. I hear it’s extremely common for that process to go over timeline estimates.
Looks like pre demolition asbestos removal began today. All the windows are open with these sticking out of several and numerous trucks in the parking lot.
They’ve pulled out a ton from the inside. At one point there was a pile up to the top window. I imagine that’s part of the process for mold/asbestos removal.
Right those buildings are so old and (it’s the DMV, let’s be real here) neglected that they’re literally cleaning up decades and decades of ancient hazardous materials from inside lol - I never assumed this would be a quick, easy job
OOoooooOOOoooOOOoo so here… we… go! Guess they’re not planning on reusing any of the buildings, makes sense. Hopefully they upzone for more height and density!
I’m more like 10-15 blocks, but this would still be closer than Publix and would be right on the new MUP going in alongside the BRT. I’d be all about a grocery store here
Unfortunately since this is a city project I don’t have high hopes for it. Also wouldn’t put it past the city to make part of it an open space and relocate Moore Square’s finest to it.
Hmmm… the recently topped-out Municipal Building is also a city project… looks beautiful so far. Dix Park - city project, breathtakingly expansive and diverse in scope. Omni Hotel is technically a “city project” in the sense that it was pushed by the city who then partnered with a lux hotel brand and developer.
Convention Center expansion and Red Hat Amphitheater permanent relocation - city projects.
If anything, I’m more confident and high-hoping for the DMV site redevelopment BECAUSE it’s a city project… The only recent thing you might make a case for being skeptical is the new bus station and (lack of) tower above it, but to be completely fair - the bus station has been completed now, and the tower is what’s been delayed, which was to be done as it’s own thing by a private developer.
When was the last time the city did anything remotely like this? Where is this coming from?
The worst I can say about CoR projects is that they sometimes get delayed. What’s the most recent city project that just absolutely flopped? The Six Forks widening? Is that even a bad thing? The city decided not to spend crazy $$ on widening a suburban arterial. The bad thing is that they wasted as much money and time as they did planning and designing it before giving it the ax.
A long time ago there was the Jaume Plensa sculpture thing at City Plaza that didn’t happen, and it got replaced with something mid. But the Plensa sculpture also was pretty impractical. The original convention center hotel wound up being a very boring design. (But it got built.)
Anyway. I think you need to go look for the receipts and you’ll find they don’t back up this attitude. Mostly, Raleigh gets things done.
Moore Square, with it’s new wide open, gradual incline lawn, has been the better Hopscotch headliner stage since they started using it, and Hopscotch is all the better for it.
