Isn’t the Fenton in Cary lol?
Well that isn’t good. That’s going to either make or break that development in my opinion. Coincidentally we just walked by to see how it was coming from the WakeMed Soccer Park trails angle…
yeah, they done removed it from Wegmans.com, wayback machine has it listing Fenton as of 1/27/21, just a month after Epic was announced to buy CTC. Maybe that spooked them or something else? It was never listed to open in 2021 however.
It’s ok, we’ll get a new Food Lion and nobody will notice.
WAS
NOW
Maybe I can get one in Wendell falls now!
I’ll stop dreaming now
That whole CTC corridor seems to be damned. First a failing mall in a fast growing & WEALTHY Triangle location. Then it loses Ikea and its reinvention. Now it appears to be losing Wegman’s. Who put a curse on this location?
Yes it is. And?
There’s still several local neighborhoods and schools, Harris Teeter etc. around the corner of Maynard and Cary Towne Blvd.; I’m sure there’ll still be some significant sort of demand, even if a TOD isn’t there to welcome the BRT line on opening day?
Beats me Though these projects are getting approved by their Town Council, right (as opposed to dying on the table, stuck in committees)? Because I’m having a hard time finding the relevant public records on their website.
That seems very odd. Grading is already taking place at the site so this would be a really, really late move on their part.
that was my thought as well
To fuel the speculation even more - this past week they posted a construction update video and mentioned numerous businesses that will be going in at Fenton, but when they got to the part that is supposed to be Wegmans, they just referred to it as “a grocery store” Redirecting...
I’ll be damned. I’ll ask around with some of my connections, but I would speculate that if Wegmans did pull out, the Cary Towne Center site going from dense TOD to fortress-like corporate campus would be the biggest reason why.
That seems pretty damning, considering they named every other business and then just awkwardly cut from “a grocery store.”
I’ve reached out to both Fenton and Wegmans, and I’ll let everyone know if I get confirmation. I’m just very disppointed if they’ve pulled out. This development is very close to my house, and Wegmans was by far the most important part of it for me.
Epic is obviously trying to have some commercial component on their side of Cary Town Center Blvd, with the talk about Dave and Buster’s and all. They are also obviously flush with cash, and willing to throw some of it around to get their way, including disrupting significant plans already in motion. I wonder if they didn’t wave some money at Wegmans to buy out their commitment at Fenton, and lure them over to the Epic/CTC side of the road.
That’s certainly possible, but that’s gotta be a LOT of money. Fenton is basically built around the Wegmans, I can’t imagine they would’ve written the contracts without making it excessively painful for Wegmans to pull out. But money talks! Here’s the question regardless of whether Wegmans was lured somewhere else or not: what replaces Wegmans at Fenton? That’s an enormous box with an enormous parking deck so you can’t just put “grocery store” there without major plan resubmittals. Like, a Publix doesn’t need all that space.
Probably will end up as another Harris Teeter now. They seem like the only other grocery store that anchors things here. Maybe target? Seems like Publix / Whole Foods like smaller neighborhood developments.
A Target would be the real coup if that’s the case. I could see Fenton management helping Wegmans pack in that scenario. But Target isn’t exactly a “grocery store” like the video described, even if it has a grocery component. At this point, we should probably stop speculating until we hear real news from Wegmans or Fenton.
It’s no longer on their list of coming Wegmans, that seems like solid evidence.
FentonNC responded to my question on Instagram that Wegmans has an active lease at Fenton. Might be a dodge but I guess we’ll see. They might be trying to keep it quiet for their other tenants
There’s already a huge, brand new Teeter across Maynard from the mall. Publix, perhaps, but I doubt Teeter is involved
Probably in the process of negotiating their way out. “Active lease” is a diplomatic way of putting it.
EDIT: OR, for whatever reason Wegmans is getting cold feet and threatening to pull out unless they get better terms. Gotta imagine post-COVID Wegmans might feel like they can extract more concessions out of Fenton in order to keep them around. Maybe filling up the rest of the retail spots isn’t going as easily as Wegmans thought it would and other retailers are getting deals at post-COVID prices and Wegmans wants in on the discounts.
I was asking because it says there is a Cary store in the works and that’s probably it
How do we think the Wegmans that have opened here are doing? I’ve been to the Raleigh one once and it was not that busy.
