Agreed, this interview gave me a lot more confidence that DTS phase 1 + the stadium will be built out by 2030. The part about him actually not wanting to sell any real estate holdings was the most intriguing for me…because this reinforces not only his bullishness in the area, but the fact that he had enough capital to actually build all of the things that are in the Kane pipeline, even if he hadn’t have sold.
SN: I really do miss Peace Apartments. One of the few apartments I would’ve loved to live at in DTR if I didn’t own a home already haha. “Cortland Glenwood South“ just does not hit the same. The aura is GONE lol
If the city covered the $250mil, not only would it take them until 2030 to start due to endless studies and referendum votes, so the cost would actually ballon to $500mil by then, which would in turn cause the city to cancel the project.
I’m joking ofc but still. I don’t think anyone here wants to hear “The City of Raleigh” for another few months, they haven’t had the best start to the year haha.
most likely referring to the recent news of the Moore Sq east lots that the city had been in “process” of planning with a local developer for (for years) to include an affordable housing tower, hotel, retail, etc - only to learn a week or so ago that they didn’t actually have all the land secured.
@wey Jake hit it on the head. Moore Sq East is a potentially transformational project for that side of DTR, so the fact that it took the city years to secure the land, just to find out they actually hadn’t secured the land honestly pisses me off. Ignorance at best, negligence at worst. Both inexcusable for a project this important.
Yeah that new name change for the Peace Apartments was a big mistake. They could’ve/should’ve put “by Cortland” in small print under the original name.
They have not you know I was talking to my dad on the way to university about the affordable housing collapse in Moore Square and quiet honestly we think the city is cheap. That why there having trouble finding contractors for BRT because there cheap.
He also praised the mayor, the city counsel and citiy manager (Livable Raleigh will probably use this quote in a future post about the COR being in the pockets of developers). He also said Raleigh is a great city and while we have some issues, we’re doing better than many. And my wife says he has a native Raleigh accent.
He at least mentioned that downtown needs density, but then never really talked about it beyond that. That was disappointing. With the Smoky Hollow rezoning and future towers, plus the Creamery tower under construction, an SH3 tower as well would pull the skyline northward nicely.
Looks like there is a new Midtown Neighbors United group raising funds to Lawyer Up against the recent North Hills rezoning. https://www.midtownneighborsunited.org
These people just won’t stop. I live in the area and my property value has skyrocketed since we bought the house back in 2011, in large part due to John Kane building out North Hills. I just don’t understand the constant fight and whining about every new development.
They just piss me off why were we cursed with them I should go up to them and do something I’ll regret, then tell them to leave Raleigh. I have hate in my heart and I’m not afraid to let it out.
Sometimes I feel like slapping some sense into these people. Like STFU! - take all this negative energy complaining and enjoy the benefits:
Stop whining about the maybe 5 minutes of extra traffic during rush hour. Actually go out and enjoy all of the shops and restaurants you have within walking distance.
Stop worrying about 20 minutes of extra shadows at 5:00 pm in December. Enjoy some extra shade in July when it’s 97 degrees.
Stop whining about the character of the neighborhood. It’s not like Kane is building strip malls with vape shops, dive bars, and dollar generals. IMO all the home builders tearing down houses and all the trees to build McMansions have a much more negative impact on ThEChaRaCtEROfnEiGhbOrhOOd.
And if you still want to be a Scrooge about everything, take solace in the fact that your property value has tripled over the past 10 years.
Oh - And also stop bitching about a greenway being built through a right of way on your property (that you knew was a right of way when you bought the place). Put on your walking shoes ( or jump on the bicycle) and go out and enjoy nature on said greenway
