The Brier Creek Westin is coming along…

You hush with your sleepy face @OakCityDylan. You’re just jealous this classy new joint is the crown jewel of the exciting and happening area known as Brier Creek, but nowhere near your new home in boring DTR…

That’s a Westin?

It looks exactly like the one I stayed at in Birmingham (AL) convention center a couple years back. Rooms were nice, common spaces were nice, restaurant/bar was overpriced. Just what you’d expect. It was nicer then the old Sheraton, and more expensive. But I felt it was more a high-end moderate price place rather than a 5star type deal.

Look at all that walkable infrastructure! You got some beautiful baby pines, the upgraded light posts, grass… This is going to be an incredible guest experience.

For real though is that a rooftop amenity on the far side, perhaps facing east?

Yeah, reminds me of the Westin Dulles as well… in terms of both location (across a highway from an airport) AND architecture.

Of course, the Dulles one is also going to be 3/4 mi from the Innovation Center Metro station (whenever that opens) with some (kind of uninspiring) TOD nearby…

This was a totally missed opportunity for DTR IMO. I get that it is close to the airport, a place where hotels tend to congregate. But leave that to the Hampton Inns, Holiday Inns, etc of the hotel world. We need hotel rooms DOWNTOWN. And NICE hotel rooms with half decent amenities at that. But again, this Weston speaks volumes about how we do things in Raleigh. #KeepRaleighBoring

At least we’re getting The Willard, which is a Marriot AC hotel if I recall correctly.

This hotel serves business travelers to RTP-based companies, not DTR. I work for a company based in RTP and no one stays in DTR when visiting, nor do they make dinner reservations in DTR. Interestingly, when we’ve had conferences that include all of the people in my particular function from the US, Canada and Latin America, it’s been at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. This started a few years ago because at the time there was no joint hotel/conference space in DTR that could accommodate the group (several hundred) and now we still use Carolina Inn because of cost.

I mean…downtown was supposedly getting a Westin a few years ago. Not to mention the two failed proposals around Crabtree. This was basically the way of least resistance to get into the market.

I’ve met a lot people around the US and outside of it that have been to Raleigh. The conversation usually went something like this after I say I currently live in Raleigh, NC.

“Oh, it’s really nice there. I’ve been there for work a few times.”
Yeah, it is. It’s growing like crazy. Where did you stay?

80% of the time, the answer was usually “near the airport”, or “near RTP”. And usually they never step foot in Downtown. Looking at the economy of RTP, it’s not that surprising why a Weston is getting built in an area near RTP and RDU.

Maybe all the people who come to visit are just lame. Most of us would go check out a downtown if we were visiting in a similar situation!

The salient point here is that people seek out what’s most important to them and often need is situational.
As a business traveler, I would probably seek out both DTR and DTD if I was the traveler put up at an RTP hotel but only if the work allowed the opportunity and the outcome would be worth the effort to me.
Sometimes path of least resistance wins. More often than not, I prefer to choose the more interesting outcome. Can’t say thast I see that as the norm out there…

i live close to RTP. between hub rtp, all the apartments that are going up, and these new co-working spaces, it’s really giving both downtowns a run for their money. they better keep up!

On, many, many work trips to Orlando and Nashville over the years, I typically stayed around the fringes of the city due to cost of hotels and set amounts I could charge for per diem. BUT I assure you that I made it downtown at least one time (usually more) on each trip. I spent several Sunday afternoons wandering the streets of downtown Nashville. I would fly in midday and purposely go explore downtown before I ever checked into my hotel. I was lucky enough that we found a hotel that would accept our contract rate in downtown Orlando, and got to stay right in the thick of the city a few times when I went for client meetings. I spent more to valet park my rental car for 2 nights than I actually spent to rent the car. haha

well, it could work there if transit can connect to Briar Creek the commuter rail could put a stop there, perhaps that might spur more hotel-like Westin or even the Omni a dream hotel of mine to be here in this along the route and in downtown.

Honestly, it all comes down to transit and hotel accommodations in DTR!!! And connectivity like the future commuter rail connects Briar Creek and Morrisville and that there nearby buses by hotels, and commercial zones to get them to the transit stations!!!
