We’ve donated to 2 opposition campaigns. Might end up donating more depending on how things play out leading up to Oct 8.
I have emailed Knight’s campaign and will donate. I can’t find his website.
I plan to attend the 7/2 council meeting but having a hard time figuring out when it is. The city website says “Meetings - first Tuesday: 1pm and 7pm”. Do they have two? Which should I attend ?
There will be 2 meetings and I might try to attend both. Not sure what the split is on the agenda. I saw somewhere else in the forum that the Kane Phase III is on the 7p agenda. The BoardDocs site doesn’t show the 7/2 meeting agenda yet (as far as I can tell).
Best to wait for the agenda to be released. Keep your day open until then I guess.
Interesting poll results on issues and election in N&O.

one comment that lot of people here may like.
Density
One poll question highlighted the importance of using language to convey a concept.
Likely voters were asked if they would support a candidate who favors “higher density growth, so that future housing will use less land [and] be closer to work and employment centers and near public transit.”
Nearly 50% said they would be more likely, while 38% said they would be less likely.
However, the “more likely” number jumped to 75% when “higher density growth” was changed to “walkable urban development growth.”

Yeah, I saw that too. We should take guidance from that and speak in terms of walkable urban environments when we speak to the council or to the public through our writings and our public testimony.
Speak to benefits over features.
Density is a feature of urbanism. Walkability is the benefit.
I think it also speaks to how to properly do science/academic communication.
Like the difference between features and benefits of urbanism (which often gets mixed up by politicians?) is super important at an academic level. But I’m having a hard time imagining that the average person would really make that connection, let alone get that it matters. Yet… a lot of government agencies seem to be terrible at marketing in a way that works…
Steph’s email to @GucciLittlePig just put a little more $$ in Mr. Knight’s coffers.
I’ll start by saying that I know there are groups like Downtown Living Advocates. But I wonder if there is a pro-downtown development group that could become more visible in Raleigh’s politcal scene.
We all seem to want to make a lot of these Council, Planning, and GNR committee meetings, but they’re incredibly frequent and inconvenient.
My point is this: wouldn’t it be great if we began to create a coalition that becomes known as downtown development advocates. Like Oaks ands Spokes is for bikes. Then, a single person (or smaller group of people) could go before a council and say “This has the support of the downtown development advocates.” And if we build this the right way, there might eventually be some weight behind it.
If you want to have a council that is pro-growth, pro-density, and pro all the other stuff most of us on this site care about, go to this link and help support David Knight’s campaign to replace Stef Mendell. Her BS ‘non-response’ to my email of support for the stadium project was enough for me. I have met David, maybe once but I know his platform is more “YIMBY” than “NIMBY” like Mendell. I contributed to help him beat her this fall. You should too!! https://www.knightforraleigh.com/
The candidates for Raleigh mayor appeared before a meeting of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. A moderator asked them a series of questions on a range of topics. WRAL posted the video.
I saw that and I know who I’m voting for! Lol
I said something similar to this in a different forum but we need to email or contact our peers to vote in order to get representatives who support our values and wishes
District D candidate Saige Martin (running against Kay Crowder) just released his Policy Priorities, and I’m liking what I’m seeing - specifically:
-Reducing minimum parking requirements citywide
-Incentives To Preserve Buildings Of Historic Significance
-Better access to City Council meetings outside of working hours
-Increased Density Along Transit Corridors
-developing a plan for the rapid deployment of separated and protected bicycle lanes, and improved pedestrian infrastructure
Where can I find my options for District C? Is Corey Branch pro or against core urban density?
I know I haven’t heard of an opponent against Corey Branch. Branch is generally not against pro urban density, I’m not too worried about Branch being a blocker on most things this Community talks about. I believe Branch is more interested in transit and housing.
I think Corey Branch as someone who is open to all ideas even if he doesn’t hold strong views on certain topics. I think “not against pro urban density” is a good way to phrase it. He’s certainly not anybody I’m worried about.
Saige would be a breath of fresh air on that stodgy Council. Send Nicole reinforcements.
