Raleigh Elections and Council Overall

Same.

He’s inoffensive, has been there for a long time and thus has ample experience in the various processes, and he generally votes with the majority vs always being a contrarian like David Cox was and the new Trio of Mary Black, Christina Jones, and Jane Harrison are.

He’s been a fine councilmember.

That’s not a bad list at all except for Jones. Melton’s obviously our guy, as is Silver, I lived in Patton’s district and found her and Harrison to be very thoughtful members of Council as opposed to the reflexive no of Jones and Black. I would’ve preferred the Party stay out of it but if they’re going to ignore me then at least they endorsed people I like.

The Wake County Democratic Party is run by Livable Raleigh, alums Donna Bailey, Russ Stephenson and the like. They are very involved in the selection of preferred candidates. Russ handed out their Dem endorsement Card to less informed voters at the polls in 2021. Their card had tRuth for Mayor, but we stood by and offered MAB card afterward, voters eagerly accepted- cancelled Russ Stephenson’s choice at least for Mayor. It’s shameful and divisive.

It’s weird for a local party org to be that involved with picking winners in intra-party races versus just trying to fire up the base.

I took a walk in Five Points yesterday (east side, Carson St, Sunrise ave, etc) and noticed that there are way more signs for John Cerqueira than for Christina Jones, hopefully that’s an indication that district E will flip.

District E also stretches to the Briar Creek area, a hotbed of transplants and newcomers who probably don’t have much connection to current Raleigh politics or the County Party. Thus Cerqueira could win a bunch of folks over if he campaigns heavily there.
Contrast this to Branch in Dist C, where there’s more longtime folks who will give him an edge from name recognition, BUT the fact there are like five other names on the ballot, he’s definitely gonna hafta work hard to pull ahead.
It’ll be an interesting dynamic.

I’d 100% call her a NIMBY. My neighborhood reached out to her about the Toll Brothers project at Harden and Blue Ride and she basically spearheaded the entire project. Now her freaking signs are in just about every other yard. Makes me sick whenever I see them.

Saw that Raleigh Forward is hosting a Happy Hour on Wednesday 9/25. Email from them indicated that City Council members have also been invited.

I may just go to ask them why they blocked me on twitter. I didn’t do anything wrong :frowning:

Remains to be seen whether a WCDP endorsement materially helps Silver. District A has more Republicans than the other four, and if I recall correctly District A voted for MAB by a significant margin.

As a resident of District A, my concern with Silver is that he really doesn’t give a rip about District A’s particular issues. He just wants to be on Council without having to run for an at-large seat.

Dude, this guy is THE reason Raleigh is as far ahead as it is right now. He was essential to setting in motion all the huge leaps and bounds we’ve taken over the last 15 years. He’s gonna be an asset to the council and to the entire city, no matter what district he represents.

That… did not exactly answer his concern, which is whether his district will have its own voice on the council if Silver wins.

Sure… but this is a lot bigger than one district. We’ve had some serious hurdles with this current Council of Slow, between the newbies, the NIMBYs, and the both - next election cycle NEEDS to get some more progressive, intelligent, and EXPERIENCED councilmembers to take over. I’m sure Silver will be great for that particular district, but again - most importantly, he’s going to be an ASSET to the entire city.

Oakcityyimby is correct. I will add that I believe Jake is exaggerating the role that Silver played. Silver was brought here by a pro-downtown Charles Meeker, who provided him with political cover along with a pro-development Council and the ITB business lobby. I’m not saying that Silver added no value, but if he hadn’t taken the job Meeker would have found someone else to do basically the same thing.

It’s ironic that Silver is running from District A, given that some parts of what’s now District A had a lot of heartburn over the details of the UDO and rezoning as first proposed.

Well, this is the same district that voted Mary Black last time so…ok.

Regardless of the quality of website, he’s likely running on prior planning experience / name recognition He’s no Buffkin, that’s for sure…

Not only that, the Republican in the race came in third to Mary Black and another democrat. And the Democratic candidate for US Senate got about 60% of the vote. It’s a heavily D district.

I guess the question anyone in district A has to ask…
Is there a better alternative to Silver?
He revitalized NYC parks and helped turn sketchy areas into thriving public spaces

Me??? EXAGGERATING??? NO way.

But in all seriousness… you think the NEW YORK CITY PARKS DEPT. hired him after his tenure in Raleigh just because he was buddies with Raleigh’s mayor at the time…?
