Please know that I was not trying to be rude. Just thinking proactively, wondering how all of the new yet to be built structures around the PNC arena will play out…
It is very unlikely that they would replace all of the parking lots so I think we can actually have some mixed use development and still have acres of parking at PNC.
The seating is hell though!
People in this market, and across much of the South in general love tailgating. While I’m sure that there’s less of it for Hockey than there is for football, taking that away will cause some noise.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who attend Canes games live in the burbs. I know this because the vast majority of people here in general live in the burbs. Parking and traffic are always bigger issues than they should be for the suburban homosapien.
The majority of every metro is suburban. It’s not just Raleigh.
Random thought I had this morning.
I know the Durham Bulls have a storied history and a pretty big fanbase for being a minor league team. How would people feel if this scenario came up: Durham Bulls get to be MLB, let’s just say Tampa Bay relocates but they’re in Durham. Would people here just be happy to have a MLB team in the Triangle or would it feel like a loss?
I feel like that would be settling. It wouldn’t be my first option, but I am a big proponent of leveraging all of our assets in the Triangle and I don’t think that would be a loss. It wouldn’t be preferred in the slightest, but better than not having MLB. Given the train access to Durham, I’d frequent games.
I would guess for most people in the greater Raleigh area would see it as a win. Most on this site would probably say it was a loss.
Yes, huge loss, would never attend a game.
I mean it could count as a lost and win. I be for it, but I still think it should be named “Raleigh [[Team Name]]” even though its in Durham.
I’ve had informal talks with some people on Twitter about this hypothetical and I think the general vibe (outside of this website) is that people are very happy with the Durham Bulls as they are: the affordability, the size of the ballpark, the cultural legacy that comes from Bull Durham etc. and I don’t think they want to mess with that. Of course, we’re all RaleighMLB 919ers and stuff, but I’d wager that the sentiment is shared by no more than 1/3 of the people in this region who care about these things.
Well, we let Durham take traveling Broadway away from Raleigh. Then Charlotte pulled the rug out from under Raleigh on MLS. It wouldn’t surprise me to watch the Durham Bulls benefit from decades of growth that’s been built in the Triangle, largely around Raleigh & Wake County.
For sure, but most major metros have their stadiums dt already. Inertia is hard to break once there’s a GameDay experience in place, regardless of preferences for parking/traffic. Unfortunately ours is in the burbs and many people like it right where it is with their preferred parking and plenty of space to spread out
I still firmly believe, even before I got here, that Raleigh is a so much better market for MLS than Charlotte. Ohio has 2 teams and their a similar state population wise, I think we should keep our foot on the gas trying to get a team.
There are a lot of suburban venues. Ones that come to mind without thinking very hard are:
Hard Rock Stadium (Miami Dolphins)
Levi’s Stadium (SF 49rs: who are a full two counties south of actual San Francisco)
BB&T Center (Florida Panthers) which is practically in the Everglades
AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys)
NRG Stadium (Houston Texans)
Gillette Stadium (NE Patriots)
Metlife Stadium (NY Jets/Giants) (not even in the state of NY)
Kansa City Chiefs and Royals.
Didn’t mean to make it a Raleigh vs. every other city comparison discussion. Simply put, people like driving to the game and sneakily driving home tipsy without having to go through a city. I would like it downtown, but honestly DTSouth location is a happy medium. It would be different if we already had light rail/transit infused into the culture, but I really think moving canes DT would hurt the draw, at least in the near future.
Charlotte FC has messed up every single step in the process (name, logo, PSLs, turf, etc). And now the Independence (USLPRO) are playing in the newly renovated Memorial Stadium next to downtown and barely drawing 1-2,000. Not a good look for actual soccer support in Charlotte.
PSL? Even Atlanta United doesn’t have PSL. That’s insane. Fun fact, I’ve been on the waitlist for 5 years for United and still haven’t gotten my spot in a section i want. I’ll probably still get them and sell most since I’m here now and resale is still so strong.
Back to Charlotte though, PSL is a huge mistake there. Even the Falcons have faced a tough time selling due to having PSL.
