I guess the weird thing about your argument is that if in the hypothetical future Raleigh achieves near-parity with Charlotte in those aspects you keep bringing up, it won’t even be competing with Charlotte, it’ll be gunning for Atlanta as a serious international center because of the unique positives it already has.
You’re just not acknowledging that the Triangle has a bunch of things it already does better than Charlotte - Raleigh is the faster-growing city after all.
I don’t necessarily want to move to Charlotte. I just want what Charlotte has. Sadly our local leaders and wealthy don’t have the same passion or urgency.
As the TV ads say, “Charlotte’s Got a Lot”. If they’ve got a lot, what do we have? Are we buying tourism ads on TV there? Of course not.
We’re growing in some areas but are seriously lagging in others. When cities like Charlotte, Nashville, even St. Louis and Cincinnati look to be cities to aspire to because they grew sooner and faster, you know your city has issues. We’re basically the east coast’s Sacramento and at least they had the foresight to build light rail. We can’t even get that proposed.
Charlotte FC will sell out every seat they set aside for soccer and be the next Atlanta United. Mark it. That Charlotte built their sports venues downtown was far better than building stuff that is near nothing and it is shameful that the then-ESA wasn’t built downtown.
Those things don’t buy a global name. Sports and transit do. If we could get in gear with those we can be better than Charlotte, thing is nobody here has that will except for me.
Charlotte is on a whole other plane. This city has more in common with Richmond or Hartford than it likes to admit. Charlotte is more likely to become Atlanta than we are to become Charlotte and that point we get retired to being a true beta like the Sacramento or Albany we are. We have to decide our role and soon because if we don’t it’ll be too late.
Comparison is the thief of all joy. The more you want Raleigh to be Charlotte, the more disappointed you’re going to be. As many have said, more important than growth is purposeful growth and those are the moves Raleigh is making which we should all be excited about. Raleigh already has its identity in the services it provides: IT and Life Sciences. Charlottes identity is Finance/Banking.
Im currently in Charlotte visiting this weekend. I enjoy it but its a different flavor of city. Raleigh doesnt have to mimic Charlotte to become a great city and I’m glad Raleigh isnt trying to. For now we just need to focus on purposeful growth and investors will continue to see opportunity and reinforce that growth. The big items will come and investors will make it fit with Raleighs current vision. It cant all be brought in over night.
I can agree with this. It’s started to develop more. I’ve seen more DTR proposals for high-rise buildings. We will not get light rail, but we will have commuter rail from Durham and through to Fayetteville as well as BRT lines. Airlines have started to add more nonstop flights here, and we’ve been on track in expansion. IBM has even suggested they may relocate their headquarters here which will be great for sports. National Lacrosse League has hinted at a team in Raleigh and if we can get our MLB Raleigh bid going, it can work. I’ve already suggested Raleigh as an expansion city to the commissioner (via email) using factual information putting our economy above others, enough that it prompted a response by the MLB commissioner. We won’t get everything we want, but we are doing better. RDU has more nonstop flights on low cost airlines than Charlotte which can be beneficial and we have the cheapest flights to Europe from North Carolina. American, Delta, and Frontier each look to expand here and when RDU has the capacity, they will expand.
It not about josenning a move it about have some of the luxuries they have. The thumbs down form @OakCityDylan@trueurbanist they gave you a thumbs down because there NIMBYs.
I like this guy @jdb820 he my new bro on the forum he shares exactly the same vision I do. And he’s speaking the truth everyone on this forum wants Raleigh to be a big city but doesn’t wanna put in the work or do what it takes to be that. Everyone who put a rolling eyes emoji well I have to say it your a NIMBY or you have Raleigh Fragility.
They’ll likely sell out their first game. As they should since it’s their inaugural home game. The team is bad though and as we’ve seen with the Hornets every year and the Panthers the last few years, Charlotte is not a great sports city.
Also their is some thought into building “near nothing” (5 minutes from downtown). Has anyone ever tailgated for a Hornets game? There’s barely any for the Panthers compared to other NFL teams. It’s just a different culture and that’s okay.
I like this dude we share the same vision. Everyone with rolling eyes are NIMBY and don’t wanna put in the work or do what’s needed for Raleigh to become a big city. @jdb820 a lot of people on this forum suffer from a disorder I came up with called JGNES (The James Goodnight Education Syndrome) Direct Messages me for more info on it.
@OakCityDylan congrats on joining the NIMBY club with Leo. I knew you hated downtown. Please be more like YimbyForLife with his bold new ideas, and stop blocking all the progress he’s making!
No one tell Doctor Yimby, but there’s a whole city of people out there even worse than us on this forum. He might have to discover a brand new disorder for all of them!
Well @jdb820 did say that everyone from Raleigh would move to Charlotte if they could get the same house there. If that ain’t Jonesing, I’m not sure what is.
Also not sure what You are referring to. Don’t see any.
