… nonexistent? The Courage have a stadium, and City of Raleigh can’t figure out how to build a bus lane. Keep beating that dead horse, maybe some day it’ll do something
aka way more expensive seats due to the “exclusivity” thus ensuring only the wealthiest will be able to go see their favorite teams play. The Bills’ new stadium in Buffalo is inexplicably LESS capacity than the current, albeit outdated stadium, and it’s pissing the vast-majority blue collar people of Buffalo right tf off.
It makes for a more fun, louder experience for the people in the arena, and a better home field advantage, than big arenas that are half empty for 80% of games.
Right sizing of the arena/stadium is essential for just your reason. Empty space kills the vibe. Most stadiums in europe are much smaller than many of our college stadium. Auburn tore down an arena and put up on half the size to insure it would be full. Guess they are regretting that now.
The new UNC arena will cut 4-5k seats
Damn. Looks like that would fit in the downtown south space.
Buddy I’m pretty sure they can hear the subtext in Denver
Really? I didn’t know that.
I suppose that they are going to follow the model of Lenovo with replacing space for standard seats with luxury suites and amenity spaces?
It’s a nationwide trend in all of sports I think. Lower seating capacity with more luxury suites brings in more money. But screws the average fans in favor of wealthy & corporate sponsors.
Personally I think it’s short sighted. Because the 10 year old kid that might be going to games now with their parents, may not be able to anymore with smaller venues, where tickets are harder to get, and may not grow up as a fan that will spend money on the team when they become an adult.
I just don’t know that it screws the average fan. Most regular season games aren’t sellouts and the ones that are called sellouts can be up to 1/3 empty (hello midweek Canes games). It makes the games more fun and builds a bigger home field advantage with more noise and energy.
I don’t think I’ve seen any figures on the net seat reduction for Lenovo Center, but they’re adding premium spaces and more open amenities in areas where it doesn’t seem like there will be a huge reduction in total seats.
But even without a change in capacity, my season ticket price proposal from them went up 14% for next year. That’s after an 11% increase the prior year. So prices in general are starting to make it difficult to remain a STM sadly - to be expected with the NHL salary cap going up and players getting bigger contracts now, but still it’s the fans that lose. Regardless, there’s been 100+ straight sellouts so the demand is there.
Parking is also going up next year, which is already $40 during the regular season if you don’t pre purchase at Park Whiz.
For anyone familiar with downtown Denver (or downtown-adjacent), they are proposing this soccer stadium in between the convergence/intersection of some SERIOUSLY accident prone and WAYYYY overcrowded freeway exit ramps and curves. (Cars speed along and weave because you have to make last-minute decisions on which lane to be in as it is already, let alone before you put in a 15000 person stadium right there). It’s a wasteland of space right now in a VERY blighted part of Denver, despite the pretty rendering.
Not saying I’m against it; there’s very little that could ever be built here practically so might as well try to shoehorn this in there, but YIKES. Thank God they have light rail nearby but it’s still going to suck for getting to and from this place.
This maybe be redundent, but here is the N&O story in the plans…

“The rezoning would also allow for buildings up to 40 stories tall.”
Oh God, I live nearby! The horror! I’m gonna have to submit my rendering of the shadows this will cause to my neighborhood to unLivable Raleigh so they can save us.
The twin towers threw me for a loop
Looks like Gibbons brought all their students with them to the session.
I do agree that the city should do something about safe crossing spaces (maybe a pedestrian bridge), bike lane improvements, etc. on Edwards Mill, but it does not mean that the developer should be required to answer to Cardinal Gibbons on all aspects of the project.
Lol yeah sorry. I’m doing this on my phone at a bar, and my skyscraper clip art was pretty limited.
To @Brandonq’s point, I’m annoyed at cardinal gibbons for their weird stances. I honestly forget they’re even there except for their loud announcers during outdoor games that somehow bounce off every house in my neighborhood. Like, they have something on their land. Why should their opinions take precedence over the Lenovo folks’ opinions for what to put on their land? Tell your students not to walk into traffic and drive more carefully. That advice already would be helpful for them.
