You know I was talking to Steve Malik, and why he believes Raleigh can have a team with that other NC City. I gave him some tough questions, in terms of Don Garber’s words on Raleigh, Raleigh’s DMA and TV Market Size, and how would you persuade MLS in taking that chance. We also discussed how that would even work in the MLS expansion committee and if billionaire like Tepper to even approve of that. He gave me some confident responses however, he didn’t respond to the question regarding why he not joining this redemption MLS expansion now that we know Sacramento spot is in Jeopardy. We also talked about MLB and talked about how different the dimensions how he can’t use that argument because of Yankee Stadium and MLB New York Yankees sharing with MLS New York City FC. And that question actually got him to admit that he’s open to MLB Major League Baseball in Raleigh at Downtown South, but he told me he doesn’t see anyone stepping up to be the owner but he would talk with someone if they’re interested.
Nice! To be fair though, NYCFC in Yankee was supposed to be a 2-3 year thing until their stadium was done. Now we’re 6-7 years in and they still have no plan
Nope… to MLS it’s about money. Something apparently Malik doesn’t have, cause he wanted soccer-specific stadiums, but he referred to Tepper situation as the same as Soldier Field in Chicago.
Durham would NEVER agree to not putting their name on a team for the sake of the Triangle or the state. They slap Durham on everything.
I’d settle even for something “triangle” not sure what kind of name you can do with that but if that’s the case, stick with Raleigh.
Do they have any other teams other than the Durham Bulls?
I think the whole reason Malik changed the name from railhawks to NCFC was in anticipation of getting an MLS team. I don’t have any inside info, but I seriously doubt an MLS team in Raleigh will be anything other then NCFC, at least as long as Malik is involved with it.
I think maybe Durham has a gun club with naming rights available.
Sorry, couldn’t resist
I’d agree if NCFC didn’t just step down to League 1. States stadium would make a nice temporary home
seems to me the pitch isn’t wide enough for soccer at Carter-Finley.
NYCFC plays on like a 30’ wide pitch
A football field is 160 ft wide (53 1/3 yds) while the minimum width for a FIFA regulated soccer pitch is 70 yards. Carter Finley does have some substantial sidelines, so I’m guessing that you could technically fit a full soccer pitch in there.
The actual pitch at WakeMed is 75 yards wide. Unless you were referring to NCFC not using their flanks effectively and playing through the middle too much. Then I’d agree.
Hells to the No on naming anything “triangle”. I won’t even use a business if they name themselves “triangle landscaping” or whatever lame-ass name with a geometric shape in its name
Way back when the US hosted the world cup, they were thinking of using Carter-Finley. In order to make it work, they were going to build a platform above the current field and cover a few rows of stands on either side. And, build a temporary pitch on the platform. NC State balked because it would have killed their grass underneath with no time to re-establish it in time for the football season. So, I don’t think that you can fit an official FIFA pitch and have room on the sidelines for teams and refs.
So no Square Burger for you?
HA. I need something more original in my diet that geometry names…
Thanks @Alan, I was sure I remembered their being a problem with the field. Though, didn’t the Railhawks play some games there?
MLS / other leagues could definitely get an exception. FIFA sanctioned matches have to be regulation size.
Yeah no they need to just stay in their own stadium and wait for bigger one to be built. Their fan base is not that big at the moment and there’s no need to change locations especially after the downgrade to a lower league.
Wasn’t saying for NCFC to go there, just saying if we were somehow to get a MLS franchise say in 2 years and DTS isn’t ready yet we could definitely play there
