Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

Jim Goodman can go su€k it. We gotta say no to political power. County is second to city and always will be he can’t Trump a few billionaires from putting an MLB Team Major League Baseball Team to Raleigh.

Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows the Canes just clinched their first division title in 15 years! Go Canes! :hurricanes:

They also have a great shot at finishing as the top team during the regular season aka the Presidents Trophy. Incredible team this year, they’ve got a chance to go far this year, pumped for some playoff hockey!

Well they can learn not to suck up to him, that’s almost a dictatorship.

I’m in the camp of a minor league baseball team would be better for Raleigh than MLB. But I see the Oakland Athletics announced they are leaving and are searching for a relocation spot.

Oakland Athletics :arrow_right: Oak City Athletics

I kinda dig it :smirk:

What’s your reasoning for thinking that if you don’t mind me asking?

Sounds like this is just more of a ploy / threat to get a new stadium from the city.

And of course here’s the cities they mention.

To avoid the embarrassment to the city for having bad attendance. Getting packed stadiums 10-15,000 for minor league would give the appearance of a successful team/city than 1/2 empty stadiums for MLB. (I just can’t picture 30,000 fans for 80 something games a year in Raleigh.)

And as a very casual fan (baseball is too boring for me to get serious about it), minors would be cheaper and easier alternative when looking for random family outings.

Fair points.

I think most teams these days only average around 15-20K during the week and then 30+ on the weekends. We could build a comfy 35k seat stadium and probably do pretty well. I think too, the exposure from TV, corporate, hopefully getting an All star week etc could make it worth it. But I’ll be honest, I couldn’t see myself going to more than maybe 3-5 games per season.

Now if we got MLS, I’d have season tickets.

Here’s a look at the 2019 MLB Attendance figures. Wish they broke it down by Weekend / Weekday

I agree with you . The Atlantic League Of Professional Baseball , ALPB , would come to Raleigh if there were a stadium . They will play this season with three new teams , Charleston , WV . , Lexington , KY . ,and Gastonia , NC . High Point also has a team .

I don’t like the idea of having a minor league baseball team in Raleigh because almost every NC city has one. I’d love for us to get a MLB team with an owner open to buying the Durham bulls and Charlotte team.

Looking at the Braves setup their A and AAA affiliates are also around Atlanta (Rome and Gwinnett county)

I don’t know too much about the Durham bulls but I’m willing to bet people in Durham would riot if we tried to take their bulls. And with Charlotte hot on their pursuit to MLB I can’t see them giving away their team either.

Here’s what I’d propose: Raleigh Big league team
Durham Bulls become the AA affiliate
Charlotte the AAA affiliate and sell off the Carolina Mudcats. I think everyone sort of wins here, except Charlotte of course because they want MLB.

Pivoting to MLS too, the actual franchise of NCFC could do something similar. Most MLS clubs have a 2nd club in or around the same metro area. Makes development easier and it’s good marketing for easier family going to the game access.

Do they really want MLB in that other NC city.

I meant buy them and make those teams their “practice teams”. Not actually buy them to move them to Raleigh.

I think so. I’ve been seeing their name pop up in every expansion article for at least 5 years now.

I just hate how it seems like the leagues view “Carolina” as one market.

But other states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc have two of everything.

Plus Charlotte and Raleigh are further apart than Philly / New York , New York / Boston and more.

I really believe MLS in Raleigh and Charlotte would be an instant top 5 rivalry.

But back to MLB, I’ve not researched much how serious their attempt for MLB is, but I hope it doesn’t deter Raleigh’s push. Plus I think we’re a better baseball market demographics wise than them. They already have Basketball, Football, and MLS next year. It’s our turn.

Ah gotcha! Thought you meant buy and dissolve them.

No I’m talking about the other large NC City, right now I appears no billionaire here is really interested in bringing to MLB To Raleigh. Now I’ve emailed a council Member if we could ramp up our process to advertise ourselves as an MLB like we did with the Canes in 1997. But I have yet to get a response.

If we can get a plan in place to convince an outsider to move a team here, we won’t need a local investor

Well, I’m posting a list of every council and commissioner in Raleigh-Wake County to hold them accountable and push pressure, to promote Raleigh as an MLB Team Major League Baseball relocation team.

I am sure this will be a useful exercise. Email a bunch of people who combined could not purchase a luxury suite at a junior high basketball game…@ trying to get Raleigh a pro sports franchise.
