So was Great Smoky Mountains National Park (NC’s shared NP with Tennessee). It was all logging land up until 100 or so years ago and would often be razed for lumber and replanted. And yet… I would imagine any current attempt to develop any part of Great Smoky would be met with EXTREME opposition.
Okay… by “undisturbed” I don’t mean literal old growth forests. Of course every square inch of Wake County has been significantly impacted by the hands of man at some point, whether for timber, agriculture, mining, urban development, or whatever.
By “undisturbed,” I mean to say: land that was allowed to return to a natural state decades ago, and then left more-or-less undisturbed ever since.
Then use this 136 acre RDU owned track for the new Children’s Hospital. If the Federal government was GOOD with their money and how they spend it I would agree with the FAA. Sorry not buying this needs to be developed in a county that is growing fast and running out of open space. Read Dr Rand Paul’s guide of Grievances about Federal spending

Absolutely not.
This was a rule that was put in place to curb federal spending!! Go shout into a mirror!! It’s the same reason that governments means test benefits, to make sure money isn’t going somewhere it doesn’t need to. I find the latter objectionable but at least it’s consistent
just teasing of course. but yes, there are rules nationwide for federal spending at airports and what airports are allowed and not allowed to do with their land. I too hope the mtb trails get saved somehow, or moved to Umstead.
You know what else would be cool at Umstead? Put in the whitewater place there branched off crabtree creek. Maybe even have swimming/diving water attraction in the quarry (if it ever closes, eventually they’ll run out of what they’re mining for and move on). I feel like Umstead, with as central as it is, is WAY underutilized compared to other rec areas here. It’s great for hiking and running, but overall its facilities feel very dated and trapped in the 1950’s.
You should have gone to the public hearing as reported by Biz Journal it 40 people opposing this move to Zero wanting this to happen. I just think RDU owns plenty of land right across I-40 near that huge economy lot that they could develop for hotels gas stations etc. I don’t care what the FAA rule is this should be an exception for this park which serves a public good. Once open public space is lost in a fast growing county like Wake it is gone FOREVER.
If they force the airport to develop it then lease it to Bucee’s and let them build a 74,000 sq ft travel center with 120 gas pumps like what is going up in Mebane.
They can continue the lease, if its market value.
You had me until you mentioned Bucees.
I-40 by the airport is nearly a parking lot during rush hour. Building a bucees there would be a disaster.
I was illustrating absurdity by being absurd. I do love Bucee’s but they would never go there.
Gotcha. I missed the sarcasm font.
If I knew what AUS, SkyWest, Endeavor, MSY, or CMH were, I’d be excited.
I think I got BWI, CLE, and IND at least!
Oh, I guess AUS is Austin?
Memphis? Come on we’re so close, give me and @pBeez a BHM flight.
with Delta now having a permanent RDU flight attendant base, I have to believe Delta plans to add flights (back to where they used to fly) when they have more aircraft available to fly, and the pilots to fly them. These new Breeze flights (and existing Avelo routes) are only 2, maybe 3 days a week, and would be logical routes for Delta to do daily and likely chase Avelo and Breeze off of them. Frontier the same, for the rando cities flown less than daily.
I have heard nothing but good things about Avelo and Breeze, but I am unlikely to book a trip on either while they have only 1 flight a day, and fewer then 6-7 days a week. When there’s a mechanical delay or cancellation, you’re screwed until a few days later, and they have no interlining agreement with the major 4 carriers like United, Delta, American, or Southwest. Meaning they can’t or won’t rebook you on another airline if your flight gets cancelled. You have to wait a few days till the next scheduled flight unless they can come rescue everyone if they can rustle up a parked plane and alternate crew somewhere to come get you to where you purchased a ticket.
Neither airline has a bunch of aircraft sitting around unused just for the sake of parking them to wait a few days. They are flying the max number of routes with the staff and aircraft they have, and this is currently as good as they can offer in terms of frequency of flights to and from Raleigh.
If you flew every week, you’d know. Flights get delayed, canceled, etc. The clubs are the best places to go when that happens. Or, there have been times when I got to the airport early so that I could get some work done in the club away from distractions.
Delta starting a new route to Kansas City on a CRJ-900. This is just the beginning of their rebuild here.

You are saying delta is about to ramp up the new flight offerings from RDU? That is good news.
