This thing is getting real. End of the season is fast approaching for the Old Red Hat. The New venue is making progress every day.

I may have missed something but what’s happening in the red and the rest of 325 W South St road?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but [REDACTED]

EDIT: I was wrong!

Thats over at the corner of Salisbury & MLK. The stub of South St will be the loading dock for the amphitheater and the rest gets some landscaping, maybe some kinda fancy tiered bench thing?

yup, I had my bearings outta whack, I see where the amph. is now

There’s supposed to be a slip lane which will take some of the space. I’ve advocated for the remaining space to be used as a park/green space or if it’s large enough, private development (likely hotel).

Good spot for a downtown skate park + green space + art installation,

Thanks Jonathan. Last I saw the attached were being included in tandem with the slip lane for pedestrian traffic, is that still in play or does it depend on everything else?

Not to armchair quarterback but it would make sense to me if that were still pending more action on the lot’s development. E.g if any new development wanted flexibility and could just be conditioned on pedestrian traffic from W South to McDowell.

Yes that’s correct. There’s no current plan for private development at this time, but I’ve suggested it. I think it most likely ends up a park/green space. However, if we could leverage it for a hotel, that would be great.

This lot seems like the perfect spot for some sort of “Welcome to Raleigh” sign, perhaps combined with some art/ sculpture / fountain.

Something like this, but with a fountain! :fountain:

That isn’t the correct welcome to Richmond sign.

This article doesn’t have the best pictures. Mine below is from 2021. But anyone else familiar with the Baltimore signage? Each is placed on a major artery with downtown in the background. I’ve loved these since they were installed in 2017. They’re simple and modern yet not generic feeling à la Rocky Mount, Richmond, or VB. Would love something clean like this at various spots around the downtown perimeter: Capital, Glenwood, Western, Lake Wheeler, McDowell, Hammond, New Bern, and on all BRT routes. Done well, an edgy triangular pillar wide enough for signage could be cool, something similar to Georgia Tech’s Campanile Fountain.

I like the idea of a “welcome to Raleigh sign” sign there, but honestly Raleigh doesn’t get enough tourism from our downtown mainly, and considering it’s in the center of the city and it’s not an entrance into something big yet I think it would feel out of place. Maybe just a “Raleigh” sign since we’re getting the gateway project and amph. (I wrote a whole lotta nothing but hopefully you see where my minds at)
