I have no problems rooting for an engine in a plane to fail while it’s empty and on the ground as opposed to when it’s up in the sky and filled with passengers.
Technically the chapel is its own Episcopal congregation. Even if the land is university I believe the building is part of the Diocese. I assume their budget is completely separated from the university–and the diocese tends to provide backup to congregations IF they have budget issues.
Other than the fact the minister doubles as the campus chaplain, I think they are completely independent.
i think a college in sw va recently shaved off some degree options for better survivability…if st aug and and others can do that, great. years back shaw had great jazz fm radio. completely listenable. but if the schools cant stay, redevelop in a downtown mode…no vehicle parking?
Its so unfortunate for the students, they are being mislead by this administration. They a relaying a message of hope and optimism, which is extremely unlikely. The university should be focusing on a strategic exit, which includes getting current students transferred and graduated. There are lots of deals that could be made to sell or repurpose land, make partnerships with other schools, entertain some kind of deal with Shaw and have a few years to execute this. But the course they took is likely to lead to some abrupt closure, millions of dollar owed to many parties, land being forcefully taken from them, and any remnant of the school vanishing before our eyes. People are going to get burned and the school administration will say “we tried our best” when they clearly didn’t.
The whole St. Augustine situation just stinks all the way around, no matter which angle you try to take.
“A former student has sued Saint Augustine’s University after she claimed she fell through the floor of their dorm at the school during the spring semester last year.”
“This is the third lawsuit filed against the school in the last five weeks.”
“In August, Management Professionals, a company providing maintenance, janitorial services and lawn care at St. Augustine’s, sued the school. The company claims the school owed them more than $1 million in unpaid fees.”
" Also in August, a Charlotte-area design firm, Little Diversitfied Architectural Consulting, Inc., filed a suit against the school in Mecklenburg County, asking for more than $100,000 it said the school owed them."
The ship is now taking on water

Is anyone really surprised?
Also, WTF is a bankrupt university with a severely dwindling enrollment doing spending money on artificial turf?
People of the jury. I give you
Exhibit A:
For a lot of small schools, the chance at being a “college athlete” is a big recruiting tool. A lot of kids want to play college sports, and small private schools can give them that opportunity. The small private college near my hometown was like 50% student athletes, many from out of state who definitely would not have gone there otherwise. Just from personal experience, several people I went to high school with went to small, expensive private schools simply because they could play sports there. Most transferred to a state school after a year or two later after racking up a quick $30k in loans. If SAU was trying to attract more students or keep current students there, spending some money on athletic facilities probably seemed like a decent investment.
And the hits keep on coming…
This has been like a death watch. Truely I dont see how they recover from this death spiral, save a lottery win or witless donor who needs a big tax write off.
…and after spending all that money on turf.
Without the track team, there’d nothing worth keeping there
I get why it’s happening, but hate this for the students. Their CC women’s team finished 3rd in Greensboro last weekend.
Interested to hear more on this. I feel like some combination of them merging and selling off assets will be the best path forward. Not sure if that’s what they are implying here though.
I hope the property behind the Performance Art Center can be sold to the city. If the Performance Art Center ever needs to expand or improve it needs that land.
$10 says both (especially SA) tries to make the City feel guilty somehow & say that the City should give them some money…just money…in exchange for nothing.
