Well it’s not like they have much of a choice…
The property behind DECPA should be sold to the city for any future expansion or update to DECPA. Hopefully the buildings can be moved. This is an opportunity for the city.
Sad. In the business world, shrinking to profitability doesn’t usually work long term.
Truly. I’ve always referred to this strategy as cut your way to health. It never works; it just elongates a slow death.
While there’s clearly a real estate play that can be done as suggested, they need to find a way to up their academics. Perhaps they can partner with industry in the city/Triangle/state to bolster their programs? They need to think outside the box if they are going to survive.
On a side note, the other week I was looking at one of those “ads” (clickbait) that was labeled as the worst college in every state. I was curious to see what NC’s would be. Well, it was Shaw. Given the struggles of St. Aug to survive as well, I was actually surprised to see Shaw listed as the worst.
I wish Shaw the best in Raleigh’s future .
This is tangential, but, riding along Oakwood this morning on my way to work (I was way off my usual commute), I thought to myself how cool the old St Agnes hospital up at St Leo’s is and how it’s such a shame it just sits there surrounded by weeds. Not that could ever be opened to the public for insurance reasons but the city or some charitable sort should pay to keep the grass cut there at least.
And also someone on this forum with a drone should fly it up there some time, maybe snag a couple pictures from above the building looking down into it, or even from inside the building look out a window.
Noted
Actually a local catering company that holds pop up events across the triangle held a dinner there one night.
Bummed I missed it, but the tickets are pretty expensive. Also if someone would allow me, I have enough lawn equipment downtown to clear all this in 1 afternoon.

Holy hell, they need to do this on the regular…
They could pay for routine maintenance and pay off debt within a year if they did this monthly
Then it wouldn’t be nearly as exclusive and worth the expensive tickets.
There was noise about UNC/Rex opening a competing community health center at Saint Agnes. But, that’s obviously been put on the back burner.
I mean, it’d probably still sell out every month. It could end up being booked out months ahead of time.
Was just about to post this!! Snap Pea Underground is one of the coolest things in our area, and I think this is one of the best locations they’ve done. The menu was themed around different events in the hospital’s history. For example, the beginning course was Pommes Anna crafted by layering heirloom potatoes dug up from within twenty-five miles of St. Agnes, just like the stone the hospital was built from.
The one at Raleigh Denim was an exploration of the process of making a pair of jeans, from growing cotton to manufacturing to shop display.
The chef has a background in theater, and all pop-ups are thoughtfully crafted high concept meals. I think of the them as love letters to Triangle history. People come out of them much more appreciative of our city.
You could probably attracted a lot of our top chef’s for a series of dinners every year - maybe 6? That could go towards maintenance and at some point restoration.
This hospital is hugely important in the history of this region, particularly to the African-American community. It would be fantastic to see it rebuilt Practically, a real stabilization with a rebuilding of the first floor would be a great thing. Fill it with a museum that celebrates the triumphs in the face of great adversity that Raleigh & NC’s African-American community achieved.
Love it. 6 a year aka every other month - would be sold out every time, no question. Who do we email?
I’m going to guess this would have some major health code violations if they tried to do this frequently
Interesting that you bring up Saint Agnes. I just met a group of ladies last night that were all born at Saint Agnes hospital. I have actually never heard of it. It does need to be kept up as it is an important part of our City’s history.
Here ya go!
You wanted a view from inside looking out through a window but I couldn’t decide which window, so you got most of them.
Full Rez
Awesome! Those should be published.
