Sidewalks in or leading to Downtown

They’re trying to trick you.
Seeclickfix is probably a good resource to log these so someone can fix it.

It’s to avoid the “hurry-up” approach of oncoming drivers who see 3,2,1 and decide to accelerate and beat the traffic lights.

Dang it, I rely on that count down when driving!!

NO idea what you’re talking about there…
(looks the other way)

is that colorblind-ness legal?

Have you noticed any changes in the details around downtown lately? If so, you may be picking up on pieces of the DTR Essentials Plan, a collaboration between Downtown Raleigh Alliance and the City of Raleigh focused on enhancing the security, beauty, and visitor experience of Downtown Raleigh. Even though this is work that happens all the time, increased resources are taking our community to the next level!

Tree trimming on/at sidewalks is sorely needed all over downtown. I’m glad it’s one of the stated priorities of the program!

I’ve been noticing a lot more of those cool looking red bus shelters and wondering if they’re new (I’ve always seen the one by NCMA but I’ve seen a bunch more recently)

Oh gosh. Can of worms subject. Livable Raleigh and co spent sooooo much time saying those were a boondoggle ~a year or two ago. There was this big thing about how the council of yes was spending money on those all over Twitter. I guess they all forgot about it lol, but I think the program was slimmed down after that.

Edit: found it (and I don’t like that I am sharing their link) https://livableraleigh.com/budget-busting-bus-shelters/

The city started a quick role out of red seats after this. Was pretty rich imo that some councilors or NO didn’t care about this at all until they were kicked out of office.

Also, I am very glad more seats and shelters are being rolled out!

with raleighs weather…covered bus shelters are humane. when i lived in reno nv and one could have 100 days straight of no precipetaion, not so much an issue.

The original design for these shelters was prettier but awful from a functional and constructability standpoint. The pared-down, more practical version that they are installing is still attractive and functionally pretty decent.

However, the other finalist in the design contest was so much better. It was modular and could have been used for everything from a standard small bus shelter, to one of the “enhanced transfer points”, to BRT. The design was not as eye-popping as the original version of the competitor, but it was much more practical and would have allowed some system-wide aesthetic cohesion that would have been next level. Plus, the scaled-back version of the winner is still nice to look at, but lacks much of the “pop” of the original (which is how it won in the first place.)

While we lament places in town without sidewalks, here’s a 48 minute video of driving through neighborhoods in Apex: mostly without sidewalks.

Honestly I grew up on an extremely low density, narrow street without sidewalks like the one in the thumbnail (I don’t have time to watch someone drive around apex lol) and the lack of sidewalks was not a significant barrier to walkability. One hardly ever felt unsafe walking on the pavement due to the extremely low traffic volumes and parked cars would slow traffic by narrowing the road to one lane.

So a new signalized intersection just went up at Hillsborough St./Park Ave. This was much needed IMO and good for pedestrian safety.

There was a signal just for the ped crossing at Hillsborough/Ashe, but that was removed in favor of the new one. No big deal, but I asked about getting some pedestrian signage up since lots of folks – myself included – still use that crossing.

Turns out they’re just going to remove the crosswalk there alltogether :weary:

Why would they remove the one at Ashe? That makes no sense. It’s an intersection. Bad move/decision whoever decided that. People will still cross there.

Yeah, it’s a shame. Whatever the reason is, I’m sure it ultimately boils down to “we don’t want to slow down the cars any more.”

Maybe if enough of us complain they’ll change their minds.

The irony is that we should WANT to slow down the traffic this close to the very core of the city.

I was riding, not driving, this time so I snapped a pic of this crosswalk near Mordecai, along Wake Forest near Sycamore. Does anyone near there know if this is a crosswalk where flags are set up on each side for you to wave while you walk across? Is that what I’m seeing?

One day we’ll be brave enough to build raised crosswalks
