Exactly!!! They represent Fayetteville.
Raleigh is a city of 500,000 people! There should be 30 story highrises lining Capital Blvd already… Obviously backdoor agreements are being made with this class behind closed doors.

And it’s not even the whole neighborhood from what I’m hearing. I know three folks who live there and they weren’t even aware of it!
I asked how they felt, one was ambivalent/neutral, and the other two seemed to mostly like it. So, as always, a small number acting like they represent the majority.
I’d LOVE to know the breakdown of those in the room and where they actually live. I bet it would be quite enlightening. I wouldn’t be surprised if less than 10 were even from the neighborhood immediately adjacent.
It would be helpful if they would be required to list out their concerns and cite tangible points rather than buzzwords. Five Points neighborhood did that for the Bickett/Fairview rezoning project and you could tell which were actual concerns the developer could try to address, which were non-related to rezoning, and which were in bad faith just trying to kill the project.
Shouting too tall, luxury, affordable, traffic, shadows is dumb. Follow up question… what is it about like 47 extra minutes of shadows for a few weeks… in winter… in the morning… that is so bad?
For real - These guy act like we are getting ready to build Mt. Doom from Mordor right next to their neighborhood.
Oh the horror of it all!
And to think that the rezoning request isn’t nearly this tall.
I seriously think those people need to be sued for prevent housing and a park from being built downtown. No one goes downtown to look at million dollar homes, they go there to patronize businesses and other places that have community value.
But they are not against housing and parks, JUST NOT IN THEIR BACKYARD!
when I hear all this opposition to a rezoning of building up to 30 stories and near but not as close as these in Houston it seems to be silly. These are twin 40 story towers each 444 feet tall right next to single family homes. The homes around these towers are $2-3 Million so no decrease in values for them. Sometimes there are shadows over the homes but does not affect the homes values. Four Leaf Towers in Galleria area of Houston. (I realize Houston does not have zoning but people have plenty of choices in housing in this huge metro) Look closely at those homes and you will see they are quite big.
Official rezoning application submitted yesterday. The Q&A session is kinda hilarious to read.

Based on all that silver and white hair, I can probably best-guess an age-breakdown, if that helps…
Is this fight even over something that would actually happen? What is the height of current proposal? I’m skeptical of anyone building a 12 story tower there in next 5 years much less 30.
I emailed the council over the weekend asking them to approve the rezoning request as-is, I hope you all have done/will do the same. Don’t let a vocal minority of affluent homeowners ruin things for the rest of us!

OK I moved the chit chat about emails to council to the Community Engagement thread. It’s actually a somewhat valid topic but I’m not that interested in it cause I feel it’s a lot of noise. Anyway, let’s keep this back to the topic at hand. Maybe let’s see what happens when this hits planning commission.
I’m not sure why, but this rezoning request is showing up as “New Request” in the Raleigh Wire thread and the submitted document is dated as today. So maybe resubmission or perhaps this is the actual official submission and what’s led up to this is just neighborhood meeting and socializing that it’s coming?

Some interesting bits from the request, apologize if some of this has been discussed already:
2 zones with different height restrictions (still requesting DX-30)
The end of the document is 4 pages of scribbled signatures with addresses. Anyone want to try to map out the addresses?
God, this would be transformative. I will seriously not vote for any CC members that vote to deny this request that are in my district or at-large. I don’t care if they get everything else right - this is a litmus test for whether or not CC members represent their city/all-constituents, or the vocal minority of old-money property owners/NIMBYs that are rallying against this.
How about you do what the Democrats say they are going to do now and “Primary” them?
A group, Raleigh Neighbors United, opposes the rezoning. The group’s website says it “violates city plans and policies."
A neighborhood meeting was held April 23 with 92 residents in attendance. Around 10 people commented on the height being inappropriate for this area during the meeting, according to city documents. The report also shows the future development would have around 800 residential units.
The new zoning would limit height to 240 feet on 804 and 818 W. Peace St. (northern portion of the site) and 360 feet for the remaining parcels. If the average height of a single story is 12 feet, that would translate to 20 stories and 30 stories, respectively.
Other conditions include: prohibiting certain uses; restricting on-site surface parking on the eastern boundary of the site; contributing $1.2 million to the city’s affordable housing fund; requiring up to 500,000 square feet of office space; and requiring an outdoor amenity area of at least 2,500 square feet along Peace Street and/or the city-owned parcel. https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2025/04/30/raleigh-peace-west-street-rezoning-building-height.html?cx_testId=40&cx_testVariant=cx_45&cx_artPos=1#cxrecs_s
