Iโ€™ve been told that one of the previous P&R directors had a thing for palms and often added one to City projects.

Statue of longtime North Carolina Symphony musical director Benjamin Swalin and his wife, Maxine. Instrumental in expanding the ensemble to be the first state-supported orchestra in the country. Raised the baton from 1939 to 1972.

Located in the lobby of Meymandi Concert Hall. (And, as usual, the good doctor Meymandi had has usual seat in Box 1 last night for the rousing performance of Brahmโ€™s Piano Concerto, No. 2,)

They are not Palmettos they are Windmill Palms. They are found as far north as our coast and have been planted inland and survive well. I have 3 of them and 2 other types of palms that grow well here. They were planted in many parks by the Raleigh Parks Dept. in the 70โ€™s.
