Wild Ideas for Raleigh

I didn’t check the math. I’ll take other peoples’ word for it. There may also be hills between Raleigh and Charlotte considering the Uwharries are in that area.

Clearly there’s nothing of much interest to be seen with 1000 ft vs 600 ft.

I think that the perfectly clear day issue can’t be overlooked here either. I suspect that those sorts of days are few. Where the sun is, how much humidity is in the air, air pollution, etc. are going to affect how far one can see regardless of theoreticals or calculations.

Walking around downtown I feel like there are too many spots where pedestrians have to sacrifice a lot for only a slight benefit to cars. An example is these curves that disrupt the grid.

When I think about integrating Seaboard a bit more organically into the rest of town this just seems logical to me.

This thing here has cars whipping through at highway speeds that you have to constantly watch out for when you cross. How much do we need this really?

Especially the one on Glenwood and Edenton. Is it really THAT important that cars save an extra 15 seconds rounding that corner here, and in return pedestrians get to play frogger in pretty much the core link between Raleigh’s pedestrian nightlife areas?

That Glenwood/Edenton/Hillsborough intersection is particularly egregious. That little wedge-shaped plot could be extremely cool – but it’s just a gravel parking lot!

Wasn’t this initially the resolution of two west bound streets merging together? I seem to remember that Hillsborough, like Edenton, only went west from the Capitol to the split with Morgan. It’s been decades now, but you used to not be able to approach the Capitol Building on Hillsborough, right?
With Edenton still just a west bound corridor, it’s asking a lot for it to just end at West and then require drivers to turn left and then right to remain on their west bound adventure. I can imagine a huge back-up on Edenton at West, and then on West as well after they turn. At this location, Edenton is the through route coming from the east side of Raleigh, while Hillsborough isn’t because it ends a few blocks east at Capitol Square.
I think that your other ideas a viable, but I am having a more difficult time imagining this one working.

I actually walk the West St. corridor often through this area and don’t find it particularly cumbersome given that Edenton is one way and Hillsborough is fairly narrow and doesn’t necessarily have a high volume of traffic due it not being a thru-street. Now that 400H has been completed and the sidewalk is reopened on both sides of West, I have no complaints as a pedestrian.
That said, I too would love to see something special happen with that little triangle wedge of land.

Weren’t there plans drawn up for some kind of bar/dog park combo there a while back? I thought I remember seeing something along those lines. Been wondering what happened to it…

Can’t really trust any proposal you see from City Plat.

Yeah, there was an unfulfilled plan for a bar/dogpark sort of thing I think.

I think the last lot would be a great spot for a dog park and small playground and maybe a small outdoor workout area.

I find it to be a little annoying when heading West on Hillsborough when cycling. Would love to see some land lost to this parking lot to implement a bike lane on this section. I would also like to see Edenton lose one lane heading West. It really doesn’t need to have 3 west facing lanes. Heading east: the little shallow island in the center has caused some pretty close calls as cars tried to pass by me pretty close.

Can we get a major pharmacy downtown? Are we the largest American City without a CVS or Walgreens within a mile of city center? Serious question. I’d love to support the independents but they don’t always play nice with health plans…

Or health plans dont play nice with them.
Good question though. Both those giant chains have beem closing stores, so these days we may not be. Access is certainly a major quality of life issue.
