501 Hillsborough

Actually, this block is better as-is.

Does it hurt being wrong all the time?

I would have loved it if the existing row could have been saved with a taller tower wrapping behind it and to the west of the existing strip on Hillsborough.

Not really. How does it feel having such a vulgar sense of aesthetics?

It’s definitely unfortunate to lose the older buildings and their character, but looking at the renderings, I see the positives. This will bring more residents downtown, add modern retail that can attract new tenants, and create the kind of synergy that benefits the area far more than the block as it stands today. While it would’ve been nice to see the site max out its zoning, I’m starting to feel that height isn’t everything - spreading density across a broader footprint can actually be healthier than a handful of supertalls that absorb all the demand and leave nearby lots sitting vacant for years. Overall, I’m supportive, especially with several true high-rises likely breaking ground nearby soon; speaking about Highline, Omni, and potentially Nash Square (even if only ~20 stories)

If it weren’t mixed use, I think I’d be disappointed. I do hope they can keep the sidewalk on Hillsborough open through construction. The way Edenton sweeps in on the north means that there’s no real sidewalk on the other side of the street.

I’m pretty sure you know I’m kidding around. Honestly I kind of agree with you and John about this frontage on Hillsborough.

I liked the vibe of that street when I moved here 16 years ago, and felt like it had (and still has) the potential to be a cool, walkable, retail strip. The problem is that despite all that time, nothing has been done to make that happen for whatever reasons. And over time, everything around it has been chopped away so it feels kind of forgotten and out of place. Also, the old sports equipment shop or whatever with the surface parking and barbed wire fence on the other part of the property looks like crap.

So if someone is actually going to do something with that spot, and this is it, I can live with it. I’m still never convinced anything is happening until construction starts.

I’m with you on this for sure - nothing’s real until the dirt’s moving, and even then, I don’t believe it till there’s rebar in the ground. Looking at you, Highline…

Plumbing and stuff has started for the Highline, it’s happening

Yeah I’ve been watching the site. It’s not going to sit unless something drastically changes.

It’s the trees I’m bummed about. I love how many big trees there are on this stretch. Brick stores covered by tree canopy and overshadowed by taller buildings is my ideal city environment and this was our best row of that, despite how sad the empty stores themselves are.

Not bad but it would have been so great if this was more than a 5/1. Any idea when it starts?

How do you get up to the rock wall feature?

Even more interesting is that they assume our alien Engineers will have made contact by the time this is built!! Wow!!!

Fencing has gone up on both structures (landscape equip rental and ā€œFlexā€ building) I assume to begin demolition.

I’m so torn on this one. Great to get this block activated, but a disappointing building.
