Bike Lanes in and around DTR

Rode downtown from Anderson Point park this morning along the Crabtree and millburnie.
Not a bad experience overall. City needs to crack down on parking in the bike lane though.
Will be much better once there’s a cycle track to downtown on new bern. That’s part of the BRT project.

That’s what it feels like sometimes.

dude filmed it all without a helmet.

I’m sure most people here know this but for anyone who’s not been following the BRT project extremely closely, it’s a multi-use path not a cycle track.

Currently the pedestrian levels are pretty low so that seems okay. There could be an awkward stage as the corridor gets busier, but hopefully that coincides with it becoming its own destination and bikers looking to quickly get to downtown can find another route or bike lanes can be added.

I was thinking with the City of Raleigh new street typology standards they would have to do full on cycle track but it may be grandfathered in to not having to

The multiuser path is more like a Greenway. I really like it because it is up above the curb. Better than bollards or armadillos.

The new street guide would require all cycle tracks on main streets to be above the curb as well

The current street guide doesn’t seem to require any types of bike lanes for main streets. Am I missing something where that was changed recently?

Applies to “new and expansion of existing streets”

Gee whilikers if only that had been the design standard in the '70s

I think it’s far along in the process that they’re probably exempt from not having to do it - and it’s BRT so that’s mostly a transit driven project with some multi-modal elements included.

City of Raleigh has received $3m thanks to the efforts of Rep. Ross. It will be used for the South Park Heritage Walk and the Chavis-Dix Strollway.

The projects are estimated to take two years to finish.

Now this is a bike lane, completely separated from vehicle traffic and shares the sidewalk space that maybe 1 person uses at a time. These are not my pictures outside of Fentons new development.

The new bike lanes on Whitaker Mill are finished. The section of Whitaker Mill between Wake Forest and Reaves Dr that was formerly 4 lanes is now 2 lanes with a bike lane. The bike lanes are separated from car lanes by a painted gap maybe 3 feet wide. Pretty nice!

Riding a bike on that stretch wasnt too bad before since traffic tends to be pretty mild, but I did have a few close passes so the bike lane with a gap is a welcome change for me. Ill be using them for my daily commute multiple days a week.

Are they done with updates to Whitiker Mill? I was expecting a bit more

I’ll drive by later to confirm it looks how I’m thinking but I’m guessing what’s down now is test striping for people to get used to and they’ll repave and put actual striping and maybe additional treatments later

awesome. Thanks. Any idea on the final vision? I was hoping they’d protect the bike lanes and maybe add a median

It’s just a regularly scheduled resurfacing project so they’re doing the bare minimum and just making striping changes at this time.

Will there be flex posts? Or can they not use resurfacing funds for that

But they re-striped before the resurfacing??
