Yeah that’s exactly what needs to be avoided. Granted, it’s way better then no bike path, but…

Hopefully, light rail is in it, Raleigh handles transit projects better than GoTriangle’s shenanigans.

Yeah, you really can’t fund any sort of major fixed guideway transit with local bond money.

Might have needed to add some context. This is Blount Street. This bus is currently out of service and is parked on top of the bike lane while also promoting bike month.

This happens constantly from those buses on that part of Blount St. It’s really frustrating. Add to that all the car traffic on this block, and it feels pretty narrow and scary to bike most times.

Include the fact that people have died from it:

I called up GoTriangle last year after this occurred because of how often I saw buses parked in the bike lane. Even if they’re up to the curb, the mirror on the side of the bus still sticks out in the middle of the lane. They told me they’d look into it, but I doubt it went very far.

Add the fact that those buses parking there blocks the visibility from the street of a crosswalk, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. I guarantee someone is going to get hurt over there because of this. Luckily (or unluckily), since it occurs so often, it’s visible on Google Maps as well. In my opinion, if someone gets hurt over this, there would definitely be some negligence from GoTriangle.

I know that’s annoying to read if you’re a biker who uses that road, but that is a wonderfully over-this-nonsense bit of public servant comedy.

Yes, and in the context of a bus stop it would make sense.

They are parking buses there, the drivers are getting off, and they are leaving the buses there and blocking the bike lane. They are welcome to observe it themselves. The buses say ‘NO SERVICE’ on them. That’s not a bus stop, that’s a parking spot.

Frustrating. I get it; space is tight. Having a stopped bus block the bike lane while it’s in service seems like a reasonable compromise between transport modalities that both need space, but there’s really no excuse for leaving the bike lane blocked indefinitely. The bus depot is RIGHT THERE. Maybe I ride my bike at exactly the wrong times, but it sure feels like that lane is blocked by a bus 50% of the times I use that bike lane (my wife swears it’s even more frequent than that). I think people would agree it’s an unacceptable and lazy waste of space to park a bus in a car lane. The city not taking bikes seriously as a form of transit sure is not the way to get Raleigh’s citizens to take it seriously themselves.

if bus frequency isnt that great at this point it is likely a small issue…i don’t see any cyclists in the photo. if bus frequency increases along with more cyclists moving downtown, yeah…painful problems.

I don’t go down that way myself because there’s always a bus in the bike lane. So, you can’t really fault the bike riders for not using it.

IMO, there’s almost nothing worse than setting an expectation and then failing to deliver on that expectation.

Bus frequency isn’t the point though, as it’s not like a normal stop where it’s in and out within a minute or so. That wouldn’t really be a problem. But the busses just sit there, as they wait to embark on their (very infrequent) journeys.

It’s not just a problem with buses parked in bike lanes. I happens all over the city with cars. Bike lanes are nice. I use them a good bit. But they are useless when people just park their cars in them.
